Most people just want everyone to know why they will be absent for a while.
Why do folks feel it necessary to announce their departure from this board?

Same reason some need to write a DA letter.

I also have wondered why peope announce their departure, but then I thought about how we introduce ourselves when we join JWN or when we meet anyone. Saying goodbye may be a proper thing to do. I left the borg in the late
70's and started a new life. I never had any support from anyone, except my two xjw brothers and one male cousin, who was never baptized. I have had a sucessful entry into the world. I only looked for xjws on the internet
last year. I enjoy this site, first, because I know no one who has never been a jw, esp. a born-in jw, can understand what it is like to grow up in a cult. Second, I have learned a lot here, there are some smart people on
this site and I benefit from their input and their different take on things. I also like the fact that it is an international site. I like knowing what those in other countries think about life, being an xjw, and just reading about their
experiences in the borg and in life in general. I'm sure I will hang around for quite a long time. I hate to see others go, it's like losing a someone in the neighborhood.

It used to seem "attention grabbing" to me, too, and therefore annoying. (The ones who are somewhat irritating are those who infer that they are superior to those who choose to stay here year after year because they are losers who can't move on.) Then I just decided it is no big deal and let go of feeling one way or another about it. Just take it at face value and say good-bye and best wishes.

sadElder, I used the picture you have in your avatar for a video I posted to Youtube.

I've always viewed the departure posts as simply polite and customarily acceptable ways for people to say, "Goodbye for now and take care".
Sometimes people will give reasons which will provide helpful context.
Of course, if these sorts of threads aren't your thing, feel free not to read them. Best

It's also nice for some of us "newbies" to see people move on with their lives.
I think that is often a milestone for people. Many of us come here crushed and as damaged good from the abuse we received at the hands of those in the WTS, or even just from the depression that comes upon someone who finds out they have wasted SO MUCH of their life because of their gullibility.
Stating that they are able to move on now, indicates how they have recovered and grown.
(This excludes those with thin skin who got their feelings hurt by others.)
Hopefully, many do indeed come back so that they can offer to others the "healing" that they received once showing up here.
Accept this as my statement of thanks to so many of you!

: But, I've often wondered why folks feel the need to post their departure from this board.
Um, maybe because they know they won't get DAd for doing it? Or that maybe they need to tell people they care about that they are moving on and don't want people to wonder why they left?
Why do you care, anyway? Don't you have a trash bag to take out of your house or something, or do you think this question is of such monumental importance, you need to start an entire thread about it? Or are you just trying to draw attention to yourself while knowing some people will respond and say those who announce they are moving on are just trying to draw attention to themselves. In a way, your scheme is rather clever.

There are good-bye threads and sometimes lengthy threads of almost meaningless fluff because we know that every post on JWN makes Jehovah sad.
