You talked to people, overcame objections, tried to turn upset people into people willing to listen- sounds like you had the position we commonly call "public/ relations, services, advisor, etc"- or in communications -

    typical job description--

The Public Services Associate provides research assistance and instruction to library patrons by staffing the reference desk; also provides customer service at the circulation desk as needed and oversees student workers staffing the circulation desk. Assists with interlibrary loan and technical services processes as well as special projects as needed.

The successful candidate must have experience with and a positive attitude toward public service work. Ability to clearly and succinctly communicate in both verbal and written (including email) formats with a diverse population required.

I would also recommend sales- if you can sell cars, appliances, clothes, whatever- they don't care if you have an 8th grade education--

Dont worry Ekruks, very soon you will be on the same level playing field as those who went to university and have wonderfull jobs. Who is at the very top of International banking? The Rothschlds. And look at what Lord Rothschild has done http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financialcrisis/9484435/Lord-Rothschild-takes-130m-bet-against-the-euro.html £130,000,000 bet on the Euro collapsing, hes no fool, he knows its going, that will take all the world markets down with it, then there will be anachy. Take this oppurtunity to get ahead of the pack now, learn survival skills, you and nobody else either will be able to eat paper money.

I understand and sympathize. After pioneering and all that crap I cleaned houses while I went to trade school to learn a skill. I found my housekeeping jobs by doing inexpensive ads in the local pennysaver, all I could afford. I'm concerned about your lack of food. Maybe you need to go back and live with family, so you can get some food and a place to sleep, at least.

Then start with the yellow pages (is that what it's called in the UK?) the business phone book. Call every single business in the yellow pages, starting with A and working your way through to the end. Some business somewhere will have just lost an employee and will need help right away. It's OK to say you've been a religious volunteer for ten years but now you need to get real and earn a living. No need to give more details than that. I think many people will understand.

By the way, the yellow pages thing does work most of the time.

I really like Giordano's advice. When you're sick of calling businesses, go to all the businesses in your area and offer to work for free for a short time to learn the job. Tell them the same thing, you need to get real and earn and living. You want to go to school. Dress as neatly as you can, be willing to try lots of different things, be business-like about the agreement if someone offers to take you on.

Being in the borg we tend to be quite cut off from the world and as a result fail to realise how much help is out there if we actually go looking for it.

Today, adult education is really growing and there are plenty of possibilities which would enable you to get your education and have an income to cover your basic needs. You just need to find them.

(A very quick search gave me this link which could be a starting point : http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/AdultLearning/TrainingAndWorkplaceLearning/DG_10033137 - I'm guessing you're in the UK)

As you are struggling in your business, there should be no reason why you can't sign on as a job seeker which will open many doors to getting onto a program to learning a trade and more importantly, getting a qualification.

This can also include job experience placements where you can try out a job for a few weeks to see if that's what you really want to get into. You may not get paid for these short work experiences, but as they are put in place through unemployment programs (or whatever it's called in the uk) you will be fully covered by insurance in case something happens - which is not the case if you just work for someone for free.

You just need to decide what type of field(s) you'd like to work in and get out there and do it. You'll be amazed how many doors actually open to you.

We often take past life experience/s for granted, yet they can be valuable on a CV if described properly.

The WBTS is valueless, not the lessons we learnt and experiences we had.

What about RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) for your "social transformation" work for the WBTS? Could this lead to a qualification and job as a Social Worker?

    A teacher?

    A (life) coach?

    Sales?

(You may want to Google - recognition of prior learning UK)

Volunteering a few hours a week, in a job and workplace you really love, could open doors you never dreamed possible.

We now wish we had done this immediately on leaving the Watchtower mid-2009.

ekruks: You have my sympathy (I never was a JW). Life can be difficult in the UK right now. Two questions: how bad is the CFS/ME, and are you ready to get out of the JW stuff and make a new life? (Oh, and a third, is the JW treadmill contributing to the CFS/ME?).

To be honest, I think that degrees have become seriously devalued here in the UK and increasingly I see reports that employers tend to disregard them because of their experiences.

I have a friend who came out of the army and found it difficult to find a job. His technique was to approach potential employers, offer them a day's free work and bet them that when they'd seen what he was like they would take him on. They always did.

Minimum wage in the UK now is just over £6/hour (c.$9.50) which is not a lot to live on, but it's a start. One area of work in which there are ALWAYS job adverts (at least where I live) is Care Assistants in nursing homes. Not everybody's cup of tea, I agree, but usually there is overtime available, sometimes staff accommodation, and the opportunity for in-job training with nationally-recognised qualifications. If you find it easy to 'relate' to people it may be an option which could lead to other things.

There IS high unemployment here in the UK, no doubt, but a proportion of those unemployed have no intention of taking a job because they have worked out how to use the social security system to their advantage. I believe that there are still opportunities for those who are adaptable and prepared to work hard. Smaller, local employers who you can talk to face to face may be your best bet.

snare&racket - " This guy is gonna set up his future. "

    Thanks !

Hortensia - " now you need to get real and earn a living "

I will use those words !

Joe Grundy - " a proportion of those unemployed have no intention of taking a job "

True - if people have kids, this isn't that hard to do.

    "How bad is the CFS/ME?"

Lack energy for physical work, so pay a guy to do the difficult bits, but then I make less money. I either need to get cleaning contracts for offices, take on guys, and become a supervisor doing paperwork (in a recession!) or get a desk job somewhere. This doing work for free thing - hard to find people that will let you do that for desk work, but I've never had a job follow.

"Are you ready to get out of the JW stuff and make a new life? "

Being ill often gets in the way of JW stuff, but being ill, it's awkward to just cut family off - that will be very stressful, the upsetting them, they don't understand it's wrong, loosing them, only people I know. A number of my customers are JWs, and it's hard to get new ones with this recession. It's very lonely - I don't know anyone outside the truth - self-employed so no work mates - cleaning customers are only worldly people I meet (see how this work is good for keeping people ignorant and inside the WT) who give me coffees while I clean, but they are not going to invite me round to their posh houses to watch a movie - maybe in the USA, but in the UK, tradition is strong.

"Third, is the JW treadmill contributing to the CFS/ME?"

Probably. When you tell the brothers that the doctors say you have CFS/ME, and the elders won't accept such an illness, and tell me it must be I offended the holy spirit, that I am letting the demons get to me. They tell me I need to pray more, read the Bible more, and be more submissive, then I will feel peace of mind.

Just to let you know that I am making progress on this

What I don't understand is the attitude of the elders - they don't seem to see that they forced me not to get an education and that this is not advantageous. They seem blind to me not being able to pay the bills, but just keep telling me to do ministry, as if it's the answer to everything.

They don't seem to live in the real world. Keep reading me Matt 6:33 and telling me if I did ministry, Jehovah would provide, as he has done for them. I wonder sometimes how they manage to get by financially.
