"that's when we see the job his mom has done on him."

    "he has demons"

"...it was like he was dealing with conflicting thoughts...like there were other people in the (music booth) with him. that's deep rooted..."

    i know how he feels

I do too. My mom still lives in my head. Fortunately I have a rock solid reason for leaving JWs...Jesus. But they still get in your head from time to time. One exJw was saying that they went to a therapist about what they were feeling and how they could be "cured". The therapist told them, "There is no cure for brainwashing. You can go 10 years and think you're fine, but 10 years later something pops into your head that disturbs you or causes you to think that you are doing something wrong."

I totally agree. I still have WT thought sometimes. I think I'm free and out, and then I worry that I am not DOING enough. It's sad...

it's too bad other people don't seem to understand that. my relationship with my nonwitness family is kinda strained in part bc they don't see all the damage that was done, the things we ALL missed out on as a family. that conflict von smith had is everything i felt, but couldn't put into words, in regards to school. what other people also don't realize is that even though we made the conscientious decision to leave, that doesn't mean those conflicts won't still be around years after the fact

He's probably not the best poster-boy for ex-JWs. I agree with jgnat: media love these sorts of run-of-the-mill hardship sob-stories. What is it with the American media? Every sad clown and his friend has a bad-luck story! ]

The mother's views are fully compatible with many other fundamentalist religious groups. JWs are hardly stand-outs in this regard.

Besides, the mother's reaction to Lady Gaga is mild compared to the extremist hysteria that saw LG's tour of Indonesia cancelled due to bomb and death threats.

I agree that many mothers could be used here. But I thought it was important to see that JWs will not support their kids if it goes against the WT. They won't even support them if it will make them look bad to the others in the hall. She wouldn't even go to support him if she didn't have to have anything to do with Gaga.

I thought it was a small but effective display that shows others the intensity of JW belief, even to the point of choosing the Watchtower and their appearance in it over their children.

i haven't seen the episode, but from the way the commentators were talking in the second video, i thought it showed just how crazy this stuff can be. it's a life changing moment for the positive and he can barely make that step? even they could see the effects of the cult's influences years after he left.

he might not be the "worst case scenario" but does he have to be to get the point across?

i think most viewers are going to see is someone getting the opportunity of a lifetime and the person receiving it struggles at first for no other reason than the internal conflict within him because of the brainwashing on him. and they'll see a mother who gave up a free ticket around the world to see her son potentially launch himself into stardom all because of the very same brainwashing from the cult she raised her son in.
