Well, I won't be getting any sleep tonight. I also live in the country and have seen snakes outdoors. I am terribly afarid of snakes aslo. I'm sorry about your experience and hope there are no more snakes in your house. I would have
called animal control myself; let them handle the problem.
PHG.
Angharad: I can't watch them on TV either. That one Indiana Jones movie had snakes and as soon as I saw them I started yelling and had to cover my eyes until hubby told me that scene was over.
Found Sheep: I don't like mice in the house either. It's not that I'm afraid of them, they are so dirty pooping and peeing everywhere and the urine stinks.
Youngbro: Wasn't playing with Sparlock. Maybe I need to get one of those magical Sparlock wizards and he could wave his wand and they would go away.
Shirley W: lol, unfortunately can't move but thought about sleeping in the car
Panhandlegirl: So sorry, didn't mean to wreck your sleep. Part of the problem is the age of the house. It was built around 1900. There are cracks in the foundation and there is only a partial basement under a very small part of the house. I will be moving everything and checking for any gaps inside that I may have missed. We have been here 2 full years and this is a first, and hopefully the last.

Once I realized my grandmother was scared of snakes and they were a defense against her, I started seeing snakes as my friends instead of something to be afraid of. Once we were picking asparagus, and a copperhead showed up. Not that I was scared--I know that copperheads are not going to strike if you simply leave them a way out. My grandmother ran scared from that after having the dog kill it--I, on the other hand, simply realized that they are not aggressive. After all, I wasn't dealing with anything like a black mamba.
Actually, I was more worried about harming those things by stepping on them without seeing them than anything else. I accidentally stepped on a snake once (not a poisonous one), and felt more compassion for the snake than anything else. Good thing the snake wasn't hurt too bad by that, as it was quite tall grass and relatively soft ground. I also feel compassion for accidentally harming spiders, since spiders do a lot of good and next to no damage aside a few webs. A few less flies around my plants, getting rid of small mites and other pests, and that some of the witlesses are scared stiff of spiders (including one that is a hounder, an obnoxious one, that I am more worried about than I would be of a spider) does more good than the occasional web. And no, they don't breed out of control in the house. Left alone, they stay in the place until they find a better food supply and then move on.
I don't care for snakes either. My neighbor found a huge snake on his property, close to mine. I would freak out too if one was in my bedroom. I have nightmares about that. Although, you probably won't have a problem with rodents.
Very interesting reading about snakes! Iam not stranger to them. I have encountered them numerous times in my life. The truth is that, the majority of snakes will not attack people out of agression but will bite as part of defense to protect themselves. At one time, either a puff Adder or Gaboon viper passed infront of me in a busy, grassy field while going to the Kingdom Hall. It was a very close encounter. It was noon day. I was so lucky not to encounter it directly with my feets. I could have been bitten with no one to help me. See photos below for likeness of that snake.

Leslie, sorry ro have teased you. I'm a city dweller. And although there are sometimes creepy crawly things, the only close encounter I've had with snakes were at the KH.
years ago our upstairs neighbor's son had a 3ft long pet snake that escaped and ended up in our kitchen one morning. That freaked me out.
This my worst nightmare --snakes in the house
This is why I live in the city
