Iran Cleric Pummeled by ‘Badly Covered’ Woman After Warning

By Ladane Nasseri - Sep 19, 2012 9:23 AM CT

An Iranian cleric said he was beaten by a woman in the northern province of Semnan after giving her a warning for being “badly covered,” the state-run Mehr news agency reported.

Hojatoleslam Ali Beheshti said he encountered the woman in the street while on his way to the mosque in the town of Shahmirzad, and asked her to cover herself up, to which she replied “you, cover your eyes,” according to Mehr. The cleric repeated his warning, which he said prompted her to insult and push him.

“I fell on my back on the floor,” Beheshti said in the report. “I don’t know what happened after that, all I could feel was the kicks of this woman who was insulting me and attacking me.”

Since the 1979 revolution that brought Shiite Muslim religious leaders to power, women in Iran have been required to cover their hair and body curves in public with head-scarves and loose-fitting coats, to protect religious values and “preserve society’s morals and security.”

The government condemns short, tight and colorful coats and loosely tied head-scarves, and routinely organizes police patrols to enforce the Islamic dress code. Public surveillance increases in summer when some women opt for flimsier clothing.

Beheshti said he was hospitalized for three days. The Iranian cleric said it was his religious duty to apply the principle of “commanding right and forbidding wrong,” and that he would continue to do so even after living through what he called “the worst day of my life.”

It isn’t the first time that clerics in Iran have been beaten up after delivering warnings, Mehr said.

I don't know, Ter, maybe the same reason I do! I hope she landed one in his balls.

Well, she must have done some damage if she put him in the hospital for three days. Although I do suspect that the three day hospital trip probably was a big cry-baby show on his part.

When I was a kid I was very nerdy and "sweet" and attracted bullying.

It really put a deep-seated repugnance within me when it comes to people who try to push you around.

Religious bullying is a total other category.

    You seemingly cannot fight back!

One day, in the 5th grade, the usual bully came up behind me and jumped on my back to "ride" me like a horse.

I don't know---I just completely lost it---I had a fit of indignant anger like nothing before or since!

I ran backwards with the bully on my back until I collided with a brick wall (using him as my buffer!)

It knocked the wind out of him and he was totally befuddled how such an outcome had come to pass.

But, he never bullied me again!!

I was just as surprised as he was. However, I learned that standing up to a bully is the winning strategy.

The above story of the Muslim cleric gettin' the crap taken out of him by the woman warmed my heart because I know how SHE felt.

She just lost it and was as surprised as the bully. Maybe went a bit too far---but, he may think twice next time:)

Good for her. She should have whooped his azz. Bunch of religious bullies. I wonder where his pride is right now considering their attitudes towards women and him just catching the beats by a woman? You know his peers are laughing at him whether behind his back or to his face.

I've read that in Saudi Arabia there are similar roving religious police who will actually hit women with sticks if they are not properly covered. If that's what this woman had been experiencing it's no wonder she went bugnuts on his ass. I just hope she doesn't get beheaded for it.

Terry, I also like to see justice in action. But, like CobaltCupcake, I hope the lady doesn't lose her head over this.

As, for you, pushed someone up against a wall! In my head, it played like a CartOOn. Befuddled! You gave me a good laugh. Plus, you taught the bully a lesson I'm sure he has never forgotten!

Of course, the sober reality is that if the woman ever IS found (or even a scape-goat, i.e. someone who fits the Islamic definition of a "rebellious woman"), she's likely going to be severely punished by being beaten, whipped, or possibly stoned to death (well, maybe not in Iran, but public executions for adultery are a fact of life in other extremist fundamentalist regions of places like Afghanistan).

Doncha love when religious extremists feel entitled to do that kind of thing, telling others what they can and cannot wear?

Speaking of which: JWs teach that wearing tight-fitting clothes (e.g. spandex) is inappropriate for a Christian.

It's in an article I ran across called "More Than Just Toys"(g 6/08 pp. 26-28)

    Dolls—Basis for Parental Concern

How can parents protect their children from the potentially harmful influence of some dolls? The Washington Post lamented: “Like the tobacco industry of old, the entertainment and toy industries generally deny any responsibility and are unlikely to make changes on their own.” Clearly, parents need to assume responsibility.

The Bible commands parents to provide children with wholesome daily instruction. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9; Proverbs 22:6) How might that be given in a way that addresses the potential harmful influence of some dolls? One mother says that she read to her daughter about modest dress, as described at 1 Timothy 2:9, and reasoned with her on the matter. Their conversations went something like this:

Mother: Whom do these dolls look like, a child or a woman?

    Daughter: A woman.

Mother: Why do you say that?

Daughter: Because they have bodies like women, and their clothes and shoes are those of women.

Mother: That’s right. And after reading what we did in the Bible, do you think the clothing these dolls are wearing is the kind Christians should wear?

    Daughter: No.

    Mother: Why not?

Daughter: Because the skirts are very short, . . . the blouses are low-cut, . . . and the material sticks to their bodies.

Admittedly, teaching your children godly principles so that they reach such conclusions takes effort. But it is worth it! Many parents have benefited from the help provided by the book Learn From the Great Teacher, published by Jehovah’s Witnesses to help parents inculcate godly principles in their children.
