Why do I love this story so much?

I find it fascinating what happens to the human mind when it settles on the "approved" notion that a witch hunt is okay.

There seems no end to the stupid discoveries of evil, corruption, sin and bad intentions!

The brain, when slow cooked on religious bigotry, marinates in an intoxication with setting other people "straight."

The corollary seems to be this: The more wrong you are the more right I must be simply because I can see it and you can't!

    All sin is sin.

Is there a gray scale of sin? The wages are all the same.

I gotta say I love her response... "you, cover your eyes."

Soon as the women say enough, that is when this inequality and subjugation will truly begin to come to an end.

    Peace,

Terry, your reaction to that bully reminds me of Ralphie's reaction to his bully in "A Christms Story." Sometimes we've just had enough of someone's bullying. Good for that woman in Iran also. What's wrong with those men

in Iran? Do they not have the ability to control their reactions to a women's curves?

Mean arrogant people deserve a comeuppance. That provides a true happy ending.

Every woman in Egypt loves that story! The story is translated badly. She didn't want him to cover his eyes, she reminded him to "lower his gaze" which means that if he is remotely intrigued, HE is supposed to lower his eyes and not stare at her. In Islam, women are constantly told how to cover up "enough", but men are rarely reminded that their part of the bargain is to NOT LOOK at them. It's a two way street. So, if hair is showing or the wind blows up and shows some ankle, men should stop looking. But they don't. Then they say women are luring them. Its stupid and we are all sick of it. Men are not animals. If you are that tempted by a glimpse of our hair you should go castrate yourself and safe us all the grief!!!

That is my studied and considered opinion as a covered up woman living in Egypt for a few more days. I can't WAIT to go home.

The truth is, the whole stoning to death thing (or even abuse for disobedience) is pretty much overplayed by the western media. Most women are at most, mildly harrassed (think 1978, wearing a dress just above the knees and a pair of sandals at the KH). In KSA, those religious police guys are getting mobs of women going against them regularly these days, they are not given any carte blanche for that knd of harrassent anymore. The problem is the woman alone. Two or more, they will make noise and everyone will come to their aid. But it is a lot easier to bully one person into a corner.

In Egypt, only politeness and modesty on the part of the WOMEN allows this to continue. As they are learning that isn't an effective strategy they are claling out the harassers more an more and it is working-it is becoming less acceptable and it is being addressed by the govt. now-harassers have been imprisoned and that is the message they are getting. IN general, in the home, egyptian women are loud, bossy and get their way more than most american wives do. I have seen it in action more than once. There is abuse and all the things in every society, but women rule the roost here. Men may like to THINK they do, but they don't. (and in their secret hearts, they know it)
