Historically, apocalptic millenialist groups need to date-set to effectively rally the troops and bring in recruits.
Unfortunately, the WTS can't really get away with that anymore, so it's much harder to match the enthusiasm of the early 70s.
Will there be a renewed sense of urgency for JWs in 2013?

The core members that are really brain-washed may step up their activity. I won't. For years I have not been phased one bit by the C.O visits that fire up the Congo. They are just mid-level sales reps. So the same thing will happen with 2012 ending, some will get fired up, some won't. My wife wants to pioneer sooooo bad. I try to subtly discourage it. I think the reality of ageing is setting in with her and she wants to DO SOMETHING with her life. What better happifying activity than burning gas for 60 hrs a month, plus contributions, plus wear and tear on the vehicle that I pay for by physically working despite health issues that limit my service hours preventing me from being exemplary, subsequently bring my spirituality and maturity into question, although my blood sweat and tears pay for the party..... add to that the physical toll of constant theocratic activity while feeling guilty for slowing down or doing something for yourself. You won't get me fired up to support a corporation and thier " powerful works ".

Well, the Mayan Calendar ends this year, so everything sfter that will be a bonus.
All the JW's I know say to each other, "it's going to be soon", "God's chariot is picking up speed", "it won't be long now", or, even more desperately, "it can't be long now".
They'll still be saying it in 2015, and in 2045, when the latest New Light will be explaoning why their great grandparents didn't see Armageddon...
