It was one of those smiles that you do when you don't know what to say next so you figure you better just leave it at that !

Yeah the magazine encourages education and hints at higer ed by giving fake examples of people doing homework at age 18 etc. The average JW can read the message between the lines about not getting lost in higher education and its debt (in scotland its free) and that university is a false economy etc etc despite the facts being the complete opposite. It also has a section for parents about your children having a reasonable view as regards how long an education should be.
How about they butt out and let the kid be a lawyer/historian/writer/director/doctor/electrician/astro physicist..... Whatever floats their imaginary boat!
Butt out Watchtower and even the parents should not dictate their kids future. Nothing makes me sadder than this newer generation of JW kids that were removed from school and have no grades. Its tantamount to child abuse in my humble opinion and the Uk now jails people for it.
This magazine is a very underhanded trick and its for our benefit, not the JWs. They will be silly enough to hold it up as evidence that a JW can stay in school (whispers.."nowadays") as they get in their rusty car and drive back to the window cleaning round.
Its online at JW.org or whatever their site is now. Take a peek.

Subtle, very subtle... and condescending. A disapprovingly self-righteous parent could not have phrased it more tellingly. Even I am not so subtle and condescending in my sniffy evaluations of what other posters write.
Never mind Shirley, I'm with you - and think you're entitled to give your thoughts on your experience and share what you thought was happening in that JWs head. God knows there are so few active brain cells in the average JWs head, you don't need a Ph.D in mind reading to know what "that" particular look means.

Shirley:
I know what you meant. I have seen that smile on JWs when they don't want to commit themselves or are embarrassed and don't want to talk. If you had persisted she would probably have walked away from you and prayed you didn't follow her.
I actually had a "brother" walk away from me one morning when I got rather vocal about the religion's hypocrisy on a particular topic. Mind you, I wasn't yelling at him but relating an experience. He had no interest in having a discussion or countering or explaining the things I brought up and I think JWs don't want to be seen with somebody with a raised voice, etc. They are just plain afraid. Period.
Bottom line: They just want to get their time in and place literature.

No, but I have friends who live in lower manhattan and do the "tables" down there. Just thought it would be something if you ran into them!
