A couple of threads lately made me start to wonder about the cost of things around the world. Lisa's thread on saving money for one. I just went to the store today. I realize we'll have to do a little currancy exchange and things in the US are not metric. How much does it cost to live in your part of the world?

I live in the Seattle area of Washington state.

one gallon of milk can be found for $3.00 but also much higher in the same store

one dozen eggs are about $1.50

cheaper cuts of beef are about $4.00lb

    catfish fillets $6.99 lb

most breakfast cereals are between $3 and $4 a box

Braeburn apples were $1.29 a pound, oranges were on sale for .79lb

I usually spend around $150 a week at the grocery store for a family of four. We eat out once a week on average.

Gas is $1.17 at Costco and about $1.29 on up elsewhere for regular unleaded, premium is about $.20 - .30 higher.

Housing is high here. There is a house for sale across the street, 40 years old, three bedrooms two and a half baths with a large family room and office downstairs, one car garage, 8000sq foot lot for $245,000. A similar house down the street sold for $244,000 after 4 days on the market last month.

    Hi Princess.

Everything you mentioned is cheaper in Spokane, including the wages.

The house you mentioned would, in Spokane, cost around $100k to $150k, depending on what part of town.

    Woot! More Washingtonians!

I lived on Capitol Hill for 9 years, and Des Moines WA for 18. (had 5 yrs. in CA for school - but back in Des Moines again now.)

Housing prices are insane in Des Moines. Ours was near 300,000. No view of the water, but about 4 blocks away from the Marina.

We usually keep our eye out for groceries, looking for the better deals between Safeway, QFC, or Fred Meyer's Grocery. We are a family of 2, so we spend around 120-140 a mo. for food.

Gas-Texeco. So what every avg. fluctuating price is there. My wife only drives since I can't due to my eyesight, so I buy METRO passes which run around $100 for 3 mo. pass.

But, all in all...after a small 3 yr. sting for school in CA, I think it's better to live here in WA. The Bay Area was a whole lot more expensive then it is up here.

Washington state, is the best home one could have. Just being located in or near Seattle: your 2.5 hrs from the Ocean and a Rainforest (which is under the majesty of the Olympic Mountain Range). On a summer's day, drive east over Snoqualmie Pass of the Cascade Mountain Range see some snow then drive on down in to the dry croplands and desert of the Columbian Basin. The summer wheat, with it's fields of gold. Another few hours to the NE and you can catch a sliver of the Rocky Mtns., just be sure to stop by Kettle Falls on the way. Grand Coulee Dam, another fine sight to behold.

Mt. Hood? HA! Mt. Shasta? PUH-LEAZE! You want to see what a real Volcanoe looks like?...Mt. Rainier. A gaze upon old Mt. Rainier (Tahoma), and it nearly wipes your problems from your mind. Or visit old Mt. St. Helens, or what's left of her, and see evidence of natures recent and mighty force. If you feel for something a bit more relaxing, we got Mt. Adams and Mt. Baker to gaze upon.

We have valley belt-ways all over the place. Forests that run as far as the eye can see. A desert that beckons adventure.

Washington State, a place to call home.

    Chicago......a gallon of milk-1.99
They made a big stink in the papers a while back about the milk being 3.29 to 3.99 in the two largest chains, Dominic's and Jewel. While the same milk is 1.99 at your local corner store. They lowered the price for...oh...a DAY! (I buy my milk at the corner store.) But, cereals are 1.99 when on sale. Damn, bea, if cereal here cost 7.00, I'd eat bark and twigs instead!!!LOL

They have stores here that are really cheap if you bag your own groceries.

Housing, though, is ridiculous!! For 250,000, you get NO YARD, small rooms, and you can see into your neighbor's window at night! Suburbs are a little better.

    Gas...1.27 a gal.
    CTA train...1.80 for 3 rides.
    Eggs.... .99
Joe's Crab Shack (at Wells and Chicago Ave.)....9.99 for a huge plate of shrimp, sides, and rock and roll music!
weed...oops..hehe..didn't mean to list that one!

Your prices seem pretty similar to ours in the Toronto area, except considering ours are in Canadian dollars it makes them substancially cheaper when you factor in the exchange rate.

House prices are difficult to compare because within the city the cost of the same sort of home can vary greatly depending where it is located in town.

Interesting. I guess the housing costs are relative. It seems high to me since I know the people selling their house for $245000 paid just $205000 two years ago. We paid $166000 four years ago and now are looking at about $240000 for our house. We are nowhere near a view. With a view add at least $100K, a good view adds a lot more.

In SA, everything is 11 times cheaper. It's a very, very cheap country to live in for a foreigner because of our exchange rate right now. Americans and Brittons are just snapping up property here right now.
