I turned on Christian Radio and Janet Parcial had a guest on this very subject matter I posted above, how strange!

Broken I am very sorry your parents did not respect the hard work you displayed to acheive high "mark's in school. The focus was to get our kids out of school as fast as possible and either get them into the "Pioneer Service" with no Trade School education or lie to everyone by claiming "I want to go to Bethel, it's the right thing to do!" when these kids and parents had no intention of sending their kids there!

You are part of the Lost Generation of the 1950s-1990s where the majority of parents were not impressed if their kids were graduating in the top of the class. I heard my share of talks from every level of the Ponzi Scheme down-playing all the hard work the children were accomplishing in school. I regret I allowed my mind to think these men had God backing them up, when all the signals were flickering "Caution". Good Job with your A grades in High School, you are smart!

It is truly sad to see the path kids go down when nothing they do right is praised, and very rewarding to see a kid literally stand taller when praise is given for the right things.

Most JWs fail big time as parents because they swap parental love for Watchtower teaching as methodology.

Thanks, though I was quoting Christ Alone's words so he deserves commendation for his grades too.

And yes, I was of the generation that was dissuaded from taking up further education. My teachers wrote comments like "will do very well in university" but I knew it was an impossibility.

I managed to do ok with my work career, but I decided to do something in my life that I always wanted to do, so now I am doing a diploma course in counselling, with the aim of achieving that Bachelors Degree that was denied to me all those years ago.

A child who has no self-esteem is easy prey for a cult.

Trailer Fitter - The love that JC spoke of is ignored in favor of organizational legalism. Once a person like your wife becomes captive to the concept that everything the organization does is truly blessed by God......then IT and ITS rules trump the bible.

JWs raise their kids with such strict legalism and completely conditional love.......and then when those children turn away from teh organization......the JW parents wonder....."why wasn't the truth in little Johnny's heart?". Mentally, they are unable to make the connection that it was the lack of true love.....the strict adherence to man made law....etc that led to this child wanting to "turn away from the organization".

I want to clarify something for myself. I was extremely praised...when I did something for the organization. That's what made leaving so hard. My parents were filled with joy when I became a regular pioneer, when I gave talks, and when I went to bethel. I was praised for THOSE accomplishments. When I left bethel, the disappointment in my parents eyes was heartbreaking. When i stopped pioneering, they were confused. When I left jws, they were angry and then crushed. Talk about feeling like a complete and utter failure. When your mom can't speak through her tears because you left Jehovah and now he is going to kill you...it's unbareable. When the only things you were praised for are the things you are forced to give up, it does a huge number on your self esteem. When your parents stop talking to you because you are now an utter failure, it's almost too much.

As was seen in the article and through our experience, when we are praised for our accomplishments rather than our efforts and WHO we are, it damages us forever.

Christ Alone, excellent thread with clearly articulated points and well-documented supporting evidence. Well done!

That being said, I will respectfully disagree with your basic position. Although I felt differently in the past, I have recently come to believe that the WTBTS' leader DO in fact understand human psychology, including that of children.

There are SO MANY examples of deliberately chosen and perfectly implemented manipulative techniques, mental and emotionally controlling devices in the pages of the WT's publications that it cannot be out of ignorance. Indeed, I believe it is by design. I am absolutely convinced that they know what they are doing, they know how they are doing it and the practice it to perfect it.

Just one recent example is the now infamous "Sparlock" video.

This is a frightening, but nonethelss intriguing area for further study and consideration.
