Final Fantasy X is an excellent choice. Don't let the name fool you...although it's called Final Fantasy TEN, each game ( I - IX, and various other titles) is a stand alone story and product...meaning that they are not "sequels" nor "prequels" of a linear story ( ex. Like a movie and it's prequels or sequels.)
There are some linear elements in the various games, but this usually deals with a battle system or creatures that remain consistent thru out the titles. But each game deals with different; stories, worlds, places, times, people, characters, events and such with no direct connection with each other. The moniker FINAL FANTASY is just like a brand name title.
Dutchie.I STRONGLY advise that you sit down and watch or participate while your son plays Final Fantasy X. Not for supervision purposes, for ENTERTAINMENT purposes! The story line is excellent, so much that my wife ( who never played anything beyond PC solitaire ) was glued to the screen watching me play this game. Its a little difficult at first to understand, which is the purpose of the story, because of the mystery involvedbut the time it wraps up in the end, I will guarantee you will understand the storyand you will be moved to tears.
Give it a try. todays video games, like Final Fantasy X, have evolved to the point as if you are playing a 20 hr. to 300 hr. movie quality entertainment. . . or novel/book quality entertainment.
Ive played all the Final Fantasy games, and Final Fantasy X is tied with Final Fantasy VII as being the BEST in the series. On a scale of 1 thru 10I give it a 9.5.

Thanks D8TA. I feel more confident about my purchase now. I will sit down with him and see what's it all about. You're the best. Thanks again.

SpiderMonkey,
Thanks for the tip. Now all I have to do is dust off the old Apple and I'll be Zorkin' to my heart's content.

My first pc game ever was ...
Wolfenstein 3D by id Softwear. After playing that, games were like crack cocaine to me. After that I played and loved:
Syndicate
X-Wing
Doom and the Quake series
Command & Conquer series, including both Red Alerts.
Delta Force
Half Life, Opposing Force
Age of Empires
Those were great games and I could play those PC games until I'm old and my hands are too crippled to work a mouse, but I try to get out of the house more these days.
