  If they had succeeded in attaching those books to the ot, that would have left basically paul's and luke's act as the nt.

  My view, jesus' new religion should have been just that, a new religion, separate from the ot. It couldn't stand on it's own, however. A leaning post was necesary. That post succeeded in helping it to become a religion in its own right, at first. Later on, it became an albatross around its neck. Hence, the catholic priests playing down attention to the ot. It took protestants to pick up the withered carcass, breath life into it and cloth it in new feathers.

  The four Gospels are late writings compared with the writings of Paul, and with Deutero-Paul , those writings which purport to come from Paul, but are written by another hand.

  It is just possible that parts of the Gospel of Mark pre-date 70 CE, but certainly the other gospels are post 70C.E, which means that it was easy for the writers to put in to the mouth of "Jesus" seeming prophecy's etc

  The English politician and greek scholar Enoch Powell, (R.I.P) wrote a good book on the writing of "Matthew's" Gospel in which he highlights the agenda of the writers, as he feels it was, and why it was constructed and written in the way we find it, illuminating.

  The gospels were just that, Gospels and the epistels were just that, letters.

  Together they make up what later/now is called the New Testament.
