I remember years ago being on failed circus and the 'householder'(TM) was an atheist/agnostic.

He was shown the scripture: 'All scripture is inspired of god..' 2 Tim 3:16

His reply: 'Well, it would say that about itself wouldn't it!?!'

    Good point.

I actually saw his point at the time too and it made me think.....though not quite enough.

I now see that scripture as a pathetic get out clause.

I also think about the justification to believe in god...otherwise you're an idiot scripture Psalms 14:1

Do you have a vomit inducing get out clause of a scripture that you loathe as much as I loathe the two above?

I loathe the way the JW's use these scriptures to make them selves feel superior.

'Here's our proof that you're a twat!' kind of attitude.

punk i 100 % agree with that. jw misuse 80% of verses . the point of psalms 14 :1 is not saying that a non believer is less human ,but that saying there is no god is foolish and not using there senses that they have. please keep in mind jw use the bible to feel above people. christains read the bible and see how low we are. jw put attention on themselves and works. christians put attention of jesus and his work!

The thing about 2 Tim 3:16 is that Paul (some say the Timothy letters are forgeries, so it may not have been Paul who said that) refered to the "old testament", so using it for the complete bible is stretching things. I'm not sure that even Paul would say his letters were "scripture".

With the 2 Tim 3:16 scripture as well, my take on it is, we don't know exactly which scriptures are being referred to. The pentateuch? Harry Potter?

That being said the 'Bible' as such (66 books give or take an apocrypha or two), didn't exist it was a later contrafibularity!

Everyone that likes to take that verse to "prove" that the bible is inerrant, always seem to forget the rest:

    2 Timothy 3

    New American Standard Bible (NASB)

    “Difficult Times Will Come”

3 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. 6 For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. 9 But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes’s and Jambres’s folly was also.

10 Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! 12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13 But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Context in regards to that verse:

14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

The scriptures that Timothy learned as a child, that scripture ( all of what he learend) was inspired by God and that those scriptures are good for teaching and correcting and training people in righteousness so that a man of God may be adequate and equipped for good work(s).

This is NOT a comment on the bible or even scripture being anything other than what Timothy learned them to be and what Paul said they can be used for.

In short, the scriptures that Tim learned and HOW he learned to use them, that is how he IS to use them.

good point point. Also, the "Love thy neighbor" crap. Okay there's like 4 pages in the whole bible that talk about loving your stupid neighbor. But a whopping chunk of the Old Testement is marching orders to go into your neighbor's city, kill him, kill his wife and kids, kill his f*cking animals, burn his gold (or take it, depending on the status of Jah's checking account at that moment) and keep his underage daughters as your sex slave.

    to quote J. Giles...

PSac - Interesting points. Difficult JW's hard to deal with will be here too.

Mr F - In my humble view the Bible has lost all cred in my eyes. Once it was a book I loved and continued to love after I left the WBT$ cult. Now it turns my stomach.

I felt similar, Punk. Then I researched other religions (not that I wanted to join them). Even read the Qu'ran. Realized that all these "holy" books just promote themselves and foster hatred for the followers of the other holy books. All of them are equally violent, homophobic and misogynist.

But to their credit, each of them contain a few pages about "love".
