If there were no guns and mentally ill people wanted to still kill, what would stop them from buying lots and lots of gas and make molotov cocktails to kill people in public settings? As one example.

So if the answer to the question is probably not, then what then should be done ?

Why is it that in most modernized countries, buying hand guns and semi-automatics is prohibited ?

The heighten danger of hand guns comes in that they are easy to conceal, easy to use, easy to arm, easy to fire out of spontaneous anger.

The question is, what is different about America that makes its people feel unsafe if they don't have a gun at their side?

Out of curiosity, what country are you from Chariklo? I live in the U.S., but I have never been as uncomfortable around firearms as I was the last time I was in Puerto Vallarta. The police traveled the streets in groups of three and more with real, fully automatic M4 carbines. I hope they're not like the police here who are trigger happy buffons who don't shoot that well. At any rate, I suspect it wasn't because they were afraid that an old lady was going to throw a bananna at them.

The armed guards who transported money from the casino were similarly armed far above their American counterparts. One of them had a fully automatic Glock 18, the other had an M4. Despite how heavily armed America is, you just don't see that kind of stuff on the street.

I would agree if they passed laws for private gun sales to be illegal and background checks were required at gun shows. Of the 11000 deaths per year by guns, I wish they would break it down to show how many of those were in self defence. Not all gun related deaths are by murderous people or by accidental discharge. Black and white banning all guns is simply rediculous.
