    Hello, Brothers&Sisters.

I'm proposing a discussion about pokémons.
I hope you colaborate with me with your researches.
I'm doing my own reaserch, because many kids in my congregation watch Pokémons on Tv, and maybe playing PC games.
Well it's not good for them, and they must be aware of the danger of this king of things.
    Thank you.

    SAM.

P.S.: Reaserches about other similar cartoons, or movies like Harry Potter are welcome.

    Dear Elsamu:
I don't know a lot about pokemon but, as far as Harry potter goes I
feel(my opinion) that it would not be approprate for children to watch. The boy (harry potter) is a wizard and spells are being cast. I know that in Canada, the commericals alone bother me and though my children are adults now, I would not be happy to know they saw it. We know that we must be deep in the last days when, satan is so bold that he is openly gathering children and parents to his side. This is only my opinion though.

    Thank you very much Asjiah,
It's very important to me your opinion.

I only hope that other brothers can share with us experiences in this matter.
About the Harry Potter issue its more obvious. As you well said, it's all about Satan's work.
But in the Pokémons case, the kids in our congragation, they find no harm in watching this cartoons. But of course, I think that they show voilence, in spite of tryng to show it in a "funny" way, that there is no problem to use violence if it's for the good.
Well this is only to explain what I know about the Pokemons, and what's my concern.
But I wish to have more participation by our brothers and sisters in this community.
It's a real problem and we must fight the problems. With the help of Jehovah and our brotherwood, right?
    Tank you.

    Sam.
(sorry about my grammatics, I'm doing my best)

Give me a break! I would much rather my kids watch pokemon than look at the pictures in My Book of Bible Stories. Egads!! The pictures in there are frightening to a child. And of course my kids would focus on the one with the baby being held upside down about ready to be cut in two.

OH Hell no...Harry Potter and Pokeman are much too traumatic for children to watch...Heck we should instead force them to grow up in the JW cult...tell them that "this may be the end of the world" every time a thunderstorm hits our city...Smack the crap out of them when they misbehave in the Hall....Let them know we would rather see them Dead than save their lives with our own blood....Show them pictures in the JW books of Armagheddon with children being killed and everyone running to and fro from this destruction..we raise them emphasizing "the world is gonna end..the world is gonna end.."
but please...NO Harry Potter or Pokeman fiction...we want them to know the reality of this cruel, ugly and dangerous world they live in....make sure they fear everyone and everything and only listen to the advice of the Elders..you know the one who just walked into the Kingdom Hall smellin of Wine as he greets you with the same hands he has just Jacked himself off with because his wife wouldn't give it to him anymore.
(okay, that last part was uncalled for...i do apologize for it..but wont take it back...)

We had a similar discussion about Harry Potter with my brother (non-JW). He belongs to a fundie group and had all these ridiculous reasons why a christian shouldn't watch Harry Potter. He and his wife are huge Star Trek fans. I asked him what the difference was, it's all PRETEND!!! Fantasy...NOT REAL.

    here's the most recent comment

This is my first time posting here. I've enjoyed reading everyone's messages! So many children are collecting Pokémon cards in my area. The "good quality" cards are very expensive, and children are very particular about "needing" the "best" cards, because they are trading them with friends.

The aspect of collecting cards (or anything else) is very typical for certain stages of child development. (I guess I should mention that I am a nurse, and had to learn about child psychology.)

Collections help children develop organizational skills and help them learn to discriminate between what is considered more and less "valuable" items in their collections.

I think we all had collections of some kind as children. Baseball cards? Comic books? Rocks? Stamps? And we all knew which cards or comics were "better" to have, and had in mind "special" ones that were more valuable than others. In this respect, Pokémon cards can be a tool to help children learn these organizational skills.

The characters, in my opinion, are a bit ridiculous. I don't understand the concept of the Pokémon battles because the opponents are not matched. They hardly seem like fair fights. On a positive note, however, even when Pokémon characters battle each other, nobody dies or is murdered. Kind of the same way Wyle E. Coyote could fall from the top of a high canyon, or get blown out of a cannon, or have boulders fall on his head without lasting harm coming to him when he tried to catch the Roadrunner.

The concept of training and becoming "the best" is a bit competitive, and this is another developmental milestone that children go through at this age. We all have talents, which are Jehovah's gifts to each of us, and developing them in a balanced reasonable way can show Jehovah that we appreciate the gifts he has given us.

Reasonable parents are responsible to determine what is appropriate for their own children. I don't like forcing my own opinion on other people, and I wouldn't appreciate it if someone (even a brother or sister) took it upon themselves to tell me how to raise my own children, when the brother or sister could be spending the time in service or studying for meetings. The Scriptures are clear that we are accountable to Jehovah for everything we do, and as long as there's no Scriptural reason for acting one way or another, it is the right thing to 'not suffer as ... a busybody in other people's matters'. (1Peter 4:15).

In a lot of ways, I understand your concern about children becoming obsessed by this kind of activity. However, it's not uncommon for children to be very involved in an activity and then suddenly dislike it without any intervention from parents or anyone else. Pokémon is no exception. I think the more parents are upset by something relatively trivial like this, the longer the phase lasts. Children at this stage of development are also testing their parents' limits and beginning to develop their own values. If we, as parents, are critical over every little thing, then our children are going to feel "exasperated" (Colossians 3:21), and the lines of communication are going to suffer, because the children's trust in their parents (and other adults around them) is going to diminish. Then when the really BIG issues come up later on, they won't feel free to talk to us openly. And this is the time when our children are teenagers that we really want them to become even more close to us and Jehovah for their own protection, instead of heading down the path of rebelliousness.

I understand what you are trying to do in protecting children from a snare. But in all honesty, I think the issue with Pokémon - as irritating as they are to me personally - is best left for the childrens' parents to determine.

The Dub collective has just decided that Sci-fi in the Dub community is ok, wizards and magic isnt'. That's the only reason. 100% completely subjective.

Notice that almost anything that is trendy (with few exceptions) is NOT ok. Over the years, whatever is popular with the world, isn't ok with Dubs. That's the only formula.

Don't waste energy trying to figure it out beyond that.

I just read Scully's post. I think that person's response is much too logical and well thought out and against the popular Dub opinion that Pokemon is bad. That poster will be shouted down and that thread closed very shortly, if the Dubs stick to their usual pattern.

    Shimmer,

I'd rather smoke crack than read a My Book Of Bible Stories.

Seriously, these 'hovahs get so paranoid about the most rediculous things. It's not that they are worried that the content of the movie is going to show them that magic is OK, and make them want to do it, it's their belief that it's the "Devil's work".

And we know what that means. It means that 'hovah will permanently kick their asses and not let them have lions and cobras for pets someday. They're afraid that 'hovah someday won't let them enjoy ALL the pleasures of life and have ALL the amenities we enjoy right now without any of the manufacturings plants, cement buildings, noisy vehicles, etc., etc. They are afraid that 'hovah won't let them hike up a mountain or pick fruit in the orchard while wearing nice clean pressed slacks and pleated dresses complete with shiny dress shoes, ready for a meeting at the Hall at a moments notice. They're afraid that someday 'hovah won't let them see the faithful men of old, like Tyrone Powers, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable and Valentino.

Yes, 'hovah's future would be pretty bleak without these things. SO STOP WATCHING HARRY POTTER, AND QUIT PLAYING WITH SMURFS AND POKEMON CARDS! We have better things to look forward to, like playing with 'Jeepers' the lion or 'Slinky' the cobra.
