I received this request for help via email ... I'm sure many will be aware of the recent events in Calgary that have been discussed on the forum:

It is important that interested persons receive my P.O. Box number and how they can send donations if they wish to help out in paying my huge legal bills. Even words of encouragement would be much appreciated.

    Mail can be sent to:

    SHUNNED FATHER
    P.O. Box 20161
    Calgary Place R.P.O.
    Calgary, Alberta T2P 4J2

Donations can be sent to a trust fund set up by fellow employees to
help pay my legal expenses. Cheques can be made payable to:

    Alberta Treasury Branch
    Account number 07109 219 1182412 01

just a suggestion, not to dog anyone, but i think that sending letters of support along with a phone number is the best way to handle an issue like this over the Internet

not to say that the account is not real, but i think this can open a door that we may not want to open

the sending of money to an unknown person and unknown address, calls for caution

I firmly believe each one of us who can should send a card or letter,

but when i see the asking for money on the INTERNET i have great concerns

I will not tell anyone what to do with thier money, but i just offer a word of caution

    just my 2

Please, as a reminder, should you become aware of this man's name it is very important legally not to make it publicly known.

This is due to court restrictions placed upon him and all parties regarding the releasing of the family's name due to the girl involved being a minor.

The Society has slipped a couple of times in the past in this type of situation, unwittingly releasing the real names in their interviews. They were severely chastised for it by the judiciary.

I don't want to see that happen to this poor man who is just trying to save his daughter's life.

Just in case someone is doubtful, I can back up the information Simon posted and confirm that the above request for help is legit.

    Hey JT:

Normally I would be right there with you in suppotr of your comments. I have posted a few such warnings both here and at H20.

In this matter however, I personally can vouch for the legitimacy of this account and that it is indeed going to the shunned father in Calgary. However, if anyone is uncomfortable in sending monetary assistance, he would greatly appreciate cards of support.

    Hope that helps.

    I agree, JT.

The father's lawyer's name and address have been provided on the forum here a couple of times, and I think this would be the most reliable way to get donations and/or letters of encouragement to the dad.

When I initially read your post Simon, I immediately checked the e-mail address from which I sent e-mail to the dad about a week ago, but I still have not received any reply.... so this kind of got my "spider senses tingling"...

If I'm wrong and my suspicions unfounded, I'll gladly make a retraction. But rather than have our good intentions go awry I would personally prefer to make my contribution via his lawyer's office.

    Love, Scully

    Thanks Kismet

esp. for reminding about not posting his name which I forgot to add (doh!)

    Kismet:

Thanks so much for clearing up the question of this fund's legitimacy for us. Untrusting soul that I am, I envisioned some rogue JW supporting lurker using the funds to give to the WTS and keep them AWAY from the dad who really needs them!

Yes, it is very important, for the sake of confidentiality, that the family's name be kept confidential. The daughter remains a ward of the Province of Alberta, and the court order in all cases of this nature require the protection of anonymity of the people involved.

That would work too! Good suggestion.

Great and my wife and I plan on helping him out. but the fact remains everyone here don't know you, have not written to you or been in contact with you.

The asking for money over the Internet has a long and painful history

in my view i was merely suggesting , write the man, if he writes you back , build some type of relationship with him and THEN send something to help him out

when you realize that folks in all 4 coRners of the earth can access this site, to ask a person is some Latin america or any country to send money Sight Unseen is FOOLISH IN MY VIEW.

    just my 2

While i trust you cause I have touchbase with you many times but other folks don't know you and i.

My main concern was not even for this particular man, but the "Concept" of asking for funds from folks to be sent to unknown and undocumented addresses

but each one can use thier money the way they want

i just believe that a word of caution is always the wise course to consider

    just SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:

A man who refuses to think is a fool,
A man who can't think is a idiot,
A man who is afraid to think is a coward

i AGREE - I think most folks would feel better sending funds to something alittle more Dignified IN MY VIEW than:

    SHUNNED FATHER
    P.O. Box 20161
    Calgary Place R.P.O.
    Calgary, Alberta T2P 4J2

iF anyone can get the law firm name and address up on the net then for folks in other countries and some who are just leery of such adddress that lead to a PO Box number

like i stated i'm not trying to dog anyone, but i just feel that when we do something make is as Professional as possible so as to address these types of concerns

keep in mind that most former jw have their "BullSh!T" alarm turned on 24x7 SO anything that seems out of sync sends the alarm off in flash

whether that is good or bad can be debated perhaps, but for many of us we keep it on the dash board at all times

    smiles
