I would not.
Would you read your child's diary?

My teenage daughter asked me this. I answered her honestly. If I had any concern that she might be getting in to trouble, like drugs, I would.
She hid it better after that.

NO.
My mother read mine, then teased me about some of the things I said. I felt raped.
By all means keep tabs on your kids friends, emails, phone, and have a look around their rooms for signs of things going amiss.
Once you disrespect an intimate boundary you will never get that trust back.

ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NOT! They fully deserve some privacy and freedom of expression.

I kindly disagee Wit' EVERYBODY !!!!!
In my house, I'm GOD. This is MY world that child lives in
it is MY trust that child should earn
As far as Provin' my trust to the child. Already been done
I was the one that carried that life in my body wit' the greatest of care
If that don't prove trust worthy , nothin' will
Yes, I have spied on my child, though I didn't let her know
when I didn't find nothin', I would let her know
how thankful I was that she was mine. and that out of
all the babies in the nursery, she was the one I got to bring home
She didn't know why I said these things, but what provoked me to say
them was the fact I didn't find nothin'
Yes I would lie and tell her I trusted her, I tell my ol' man the same thing
Along wit' encouragment, she wanted me to trust her more

Should your child read your journal?

Absolutely not! It's an invasion of their privacy. Like invading their private thoughts. All the things we hate for ourselves. The 'thought police' comes to mind!
If you want to know what's in their minds/hearts then have a good relationship with them where they come to you and tell you what they are thinking /doing.
