In the days before 'free' literature, pioneers and special pioneers paid for their magazines and literature at reduced rates. The Accounts Servant had to claim this credit from the Society each month when the literature was paid for.
Thus you had to be appointed to the post and meet the monthly requirements in order to get your discount.

Auxiliary pioneering is down to 30 hours? What is reg pio hours?
Making it easier makes it more alluring and enticing.
Getting people to pioneer means more exposure and possible sales for the WTS.
(even though set prices have been removed, getting a donation for lets say a bible still makes the organization money)
Wearing a " I'm Pioneering this month " to a JWS is badge of honor and boastfulness.
Did the first era Christians have to hand in the total amount of hours they spent preaching and proselytizing the faith ?
This counting of hours in service and the counting of how many pieces of literature placed or given out , is wholly
a creation by the WTS. publishing house and is not based on scripture the least..
What this is a test or examination of your personal devotion not to god but the WTS. Corporation and the men who run this organization.
Taking what BU2B says one step further;
- if a major catastrophe such as the End of the World was really "just around the corner", and the JWs were genuinely interested in warning people about this, they would surely be using much more effective means of sounding that warning.
Around where I live, there have recently been a series of disastrous bushfires. Luckily for us, the Emergency Services didn't send a group of volunteers walking from door to door to warn people to evacuate:
- more like broadcasts by TV and radio; then finally, warnings sounded through the loud-hailers on the Emergency Service vehicles.
If "The End" was indeed as close as the JWs try to have you believe (or indeed, if there is even an "End" coming at all) then they would surely need to use more effective means of warning people. (On the other hand, if matters are not so urgent that effective means of sounding a warning are not required, then that is an admission that everything they have been preaching for the last 130 years is just 24-carat nonsense!)

As I recall, pious pio's received a liturature cost discount. This, of course, went right to their bottom line and they received a 1099 from Brooklyn based on very tedious bookkeeping. They also received an "Escape Armageddon Free" coupon during the pioneering period as long as all requirements were met.
If anyone truly believes that the [work] they do will really save lives, why dont they do this more often??
Say someone truly believed that God gave them an assignment to warn the world of something. Would they do it half-assed?
Would you find them the day after they were given that warning still sitting at their computer posting trivial comments on Facebook or maybe JWN instead of warning the world?
I agree, you don't need a special title or badge to wear. You don't need to be an official pioneer. You wouldn't worry about recognition from men. You wouldn't waste your time. You would see that the highest authority in the universe gave you a job to do.

Yes mustn't forget that since Armageddon is coming soon, one wants to make sure one doesn't get whacked.
