Nice history lesson. but what makes "Royalty", Royal? Why are they more special than anyone else? Because you can trace their history all the way back to the good ole days?
Break the chains that bind you, unless, of course, your into that sort of thing.
Basically it stems back to old tribal chiefs who conquered and ruled. Eventually some of them had children who automatically inherited the role.
At one time, England had several Kings who fought with each others armies for domination of the entire country.
About a thousand years ago, the role became more respectable and the monarch slowly started to become responsible for his subjects welfare. Bad Kings exploited the people, good Kings spread the wealth around, though most of them kept a good bit for themselves so that they could finance wars abroad to enlarge their territory.
By the 1500's, monarchs such as Henry 8 were providing work for hundreds of thousands of tradesmen as they built castles and ships to protect the country from invasion. Of course, the monarch could still order someone to be beheaded if they upset him, so he would be liked but also feared.
Mrs Ozzie and I have been away for the Easter break and heard the news while away.
The Queen Mum is rightlt revered. Not only for the reasons given by Eman, but the fact that as a monarch she refused to be exiled to Canada for the duration of the war. Instead she wanted to be with her people. Notice the great quote given by Eman about the East Enders. Those memories run very deep and she was a great lady and courageous. In other words, she was The Queen.
Cheers, Ozzie

What is Canada's current relationship to the United Kingdom?
It has struck me over the years that Queen Elizabeth II is stuffy and studgy. Definitely NOT a queen of the people. I'm glad to know that the Queen Mother was.

You are correct, HM does not come across as a particularly emotive woman.
It's been said that her natural expression is unsmiling, however I saw her once only and on that occasion she was grinning broadly, her whole personality seemed to light up.
Eman - thanks for the little history lesson. Unfortunately, I've not know much about Britain's royalty and never much interested...even when Diana was alive. But your explanation was succinct and to the point. Thanks so much for making it interesting for me!
