I am Welsh born and bred, used to speak it, now not so well. I know Machynlleth very well, a pretty town surrounded by forest. I haven't investigated my ancestry although I know that the previous three generations were also Welsh. Whilst I'm from North Wales I believe that the essence of the Welsh nature and community is found more in the South, along with the deep lyrical accents.

Lozhasleft- thanks for the info on Machynlleth (you must help me learn how to pronounce it Welch seems like a real tongue twister)

Welch is a grape drink here, its Welsh with an S Designs....

Im from South Wales, land of Song, Myth, and Castles......you wont be disappointed if you visit. The language is very lyrical but hard to pronounce, my English husband says just pretend you have a swollen tongue and a fur ball in your throat and your half way there!

Mach as its known locally, was the seat of Owain Glyndwrs Welsh Parliment in 1404, and is known as the ancient capital of Wales. Fascinating history there.

Ive welcomed others from JWN before to my humble cottage, and you would be most welcome for a hearty meal and some fine beer should you ever make it.

Are you talking about Mantan or the Mandan people http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandan_people ?

You mean the Mandan tribe right?

I have heard about this story. I don't believe it.

Some tribes on the northeast coast probably did mix with Scandinavians in the medieval period however.

DD- there seems to be several spellings of the tribe's name or how it gets translated into our sounds and with our letters. sbf- the Scandinavian/Viking connection does seem the more plausible reason for their lighter features, maybe some DNA testing on the few remaining tribal members will give us the details.
