  I think that an embargo like the one in the 70's would be just what this country needs to finalize a Hydrogen fuel cell technology. If an embargo happened now, then in 10 years we should all be driving hydrogen powered cars.

  It's currently technologically possible to do so, but we need the infrastructure and cars mass produced. I predict that it will be 30 years more before this technology is widely used.

  Gill, OPEC has been trying to unite for several years but they keep undercutting each other for the cash. Any unity they demonstrate will soon disappear because of greed.

  Seriously, while the selfish side of me hopes for the status quo of low prices (especially since I just purchased a pickup truck), I know that if fuel gets expensive in the USA, the technology is in place to make drastic improvements in efficiency. We just need a monetary kick start to push our fat butts out of SUV's.

  Hydrogen fuel cells, and hybrid gas electrics. Two technologies that work now, and can be cost efficient with just a bit of volume. For that matter, the hybrids are cost efficient now, to the consumer.

  A Honda Insight is probably 4X as fuel efficient as a Ford Expedition, w/ almost zero harmful emisions. It is not at all uncommon to see Expeditions and Suburbans driven w/o any passengers here in Texas.
