i said, "jesus is believed to have said that around 2000 years ago. either the prediction was a failure or he was referring to an event that has passed". i never saw the nice brother again.

Most JWs compartmentalize armageddon. It's this fantasy of theirs that they don't think about in real world terms; just a vague notion that this big end is coming, and the thought stops there. Because to continue the thought is really disturbing.

This is so true...it's a survival mechanism. On some level, they don't really beleive that it's true...but they think they should beleive that it's true. How could all these JW's continue bringing children into the world if the truly beleived such an event was literal much less going to happen any day ?

That tired old line wasn't first uttered by Russell; he picked it up from Mller's adventists - that gives it a conservative age of more than 180 years!

Hope springs eternal and foolishness shall never die.

    I would say,

"You told my wife's grandparents clearly and without equivocation that they were of the great multitude. You told them they would never get old. You counseled them against having children. They died in the early 1980's and would be over 120 years old today. The 1980's is an interesting time periord, because it's the last time your organization stated in print that it would be a problem if things came to this point."
