I guess there are certain subjects that cannot be answered logicaly but must be believed in to keep cohesion within the group/collective.
This 'reaction' also necessatates lableing or 'marking' the questioning individual, intimidating and isolating them to KEEP QUITE!!!

There are a great many elders that are strictly top water stuff. They have learned how to use the index and that’s about it. If you ask something that is not easily referenced with a bout a hundred Watchtower articles, then they get very nervous. (They have just peered into the depths below and they have seen great big monsters lurking down there!) These guys instinctively know that they are shallow but resent it terribly when forced to confront their inadequacies.

Then there are the deep water swimmers that have seen (and skirted) those great big denizens of the deep (Why does God permit evil…really; Why has the Society made so many mistakes if it is led my the holy spirit?; Why are there so many stupid elders if they are all appointed by the holy spirit?;Why is the Bible so cryptic?; etc.) These guys know about these monsters of the deep but they do not want to confront them. They are looking for the answers themselves and when they are confronted with these questions by others it just reminds them of their own doubts. When they can’t convince others by the publications, it makes them angry because they realize down deep inside that the answers they are giving are wrong. Instead of being angry at the source of the problem they strike out at the much more vulnerable publisher in front of them.

THE 2 COMMENTS above i feel truly sum of the problem that many elders face when they are asked to answer a question without the wt index

they remind me of PAPER MCSEs

i met a guy who is a CNNA ONLY ON PAPER

if you go beyond the questions on the test, he is lost

same with most elders, any question that you ask and you don't accept the canned wt answer the elders is lost

so he pulls out of his bag the old ACE card--

    "ARE YOU QUESTIONING THE FDS?"

IT WORk ALMOST everytime on most jw

JT: Too true! Sometimes I wish I could go back and ask a few of those Elders a question or two just to see their reactions.

There is a small minority good elders that are good brothers, that treat others with love and respect. Unfortunately these ones are over shadowed by the egotistical, closed minded, dictatorial elders. The later type of elders is the ones that have all the say in the congregation.

That was the big reason why I left the borg. I was not satisfied with their shallow answers on my legitimate questions that they the elders could not answer. All they would ever say is, "Wait on Jehovah", "The light gets brighter", "You need to pray more" etc. One day I asked an elder about 1975. Surprisingly he admitted the societies past mistakes. I then replied to him, "You know what that does to someone’s belief in an organization that claims to have to truth?" He couldn't answer me. He just shrugged his shoulders and walked away.

I can't say I have seen elders actually thump their bibles when not being able to answer a question. Your observation though is correct, that they are unable to answer your questions and it is challenging their own faith. They are saying to you that your not supposed to ask those questions and to go along with the status quoe. That is another sign of a cult.

Why do they do it? Hey, if they can't answer a question its only because you shouldn't be asking it!!! Where would you get such a question anyways? You've been on the internet talking to apostates haven't you?!?!?!

Ozzie...good post. I have seen those thumb thumping elders and I have seen the expressions on their faces....they would have looked at your friend with one of those 'high and mighty' faces (smirk) and they would have heard bells ringing in their heads (holy spirit) and they would have come to the conclusion 'she is obviously NOT righteously disposed' (she's too much work).

Nemesis...I am appalled at that CO's behaviour...but I am not surprised. The more narrow minded an elder is...the more in harmony he is with the society. I'm sure that particular CO has offended many many more people...typical borg mentality.
