    AndDontCallMeShirley:

You are referring to 539 BC. 537 BC is when they say the Jews returned to Jerusalem and ended the 70 years.

Of course, two problems with that:

    (1) 537 BC is at best conjecture. Ezra 3:1 seems to be pointing to 538 BC.

    (2) The return of the Exiles do not end the 70 years, Babylon’s punishment in 539 BC does.

Of course, the most damning fact is that the Watchtower use of quotations and citations. It helped me realize they were not just wrong, they were being dishonest.

Nebuchadnezzar II (c 634-562 BC) was the second and greatest king of the Chaldean dynasty of Babylonia. After conquering Syria from the Egyptians (605 BC), he attacked Judah, capturing Jerusalem in 597 BC (cf. II Kings 24,25), and recapturing it in 587/586 BC when the city and temple were destroyed. He deported prominent citizens from the conquered lands into exile in Babylon, and the prophet Daniel was apparently included in this deportation. Nebuchadnezzar II is credited with building the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

Numerous clay tablets from ancient Mesopotamia have been excavated by archaeologists. These historiographical texts chronicle events in the history of Assyria and Babylon from approximately 1500-350 BC. Chronicle 5 of the Babylonian chronicles records the exploits of King Nebuchadnezzar II, including the capture of Jerusalem (597 and 587 BC).

This artifact, now housed in the British Museum, verifies the biblical account of Nebuchadnezzar’s capture and destruction of Jerusalem, as well as the deportation of Jewish persons into exile in Babylon.

    AnnOMaly:

You'll find the rebuttals laid out on Jeffro's site: http://jeffro77.wordpress.com/response-to-607-website/#ChapterC

Just saw this thread. Thanks Ann.

As I've already indicated at the linked rebuttal, the author of the 'jehovahsjudgment' site is just plain wrong.

    See also http://jeffro77.wordpress.com/607-for-dummies/.

    Any questions?

The problem is that even if you had proof to the contrary which is tons of archaeological evidence - it won't matter to someone who thinks that the bible is 100% correct.

The thing is, the Bible does not actually support the JW dogma at all. Their 607 doctrine contradicts various scriptures, and ignores or distorts the context of others. So even if the Bible is 100% correct, JWs are still wrong.

And the jehovahsjudgement site goes even further and provides its own wrong interpretations of the '70 years for Tyre' and the '40 years for Egypt' that contradict the Watch Tower Society's wrong interpretations of those same things.

For me i like the smaller peripheral points of evidence that nobody looks at. For example, in Jeremiah 44 ( which is placed at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem) the writer mentions the ruling pharaoh at that time. In this case Pharaoh Hophra

Yep. I've mentioned Hophra on my site. See http://jeffro77.wordpress.com/response-to-607-website/#Chapter10.

I also provided further detail about Hophra on a thread on here a few years back. See http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/bible/96647/1/Hophra-and-the-Watchtower-Society. (Unfortunately, the thread was flooded with delusional drivel from JCanon (now known as Larsinger58).

Ive always wondered that somebody in NY simply mixed up the start of N reign and the actual destruction. One occurs in 605 bce and the other in 587 bce. Being extremely intelligent they didnt realise that bigger bce years are earlier and perhaps thought he started to reign in 587 bce and after a few years eventually destroyed jeruslame in 607. Theres also the correction for omitting year 0 and the fancy 2520 years. I personally think thats how they found the date to begin with.

According to the Bible , he conquered Judah and Jerusalem , and sent the Jews into exile . He is credited with the construction of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and for the destruction of the First Temple . He is featured in the Book of Daniel and is mentioned in several other books of the Bibl

There is no evidence, even in very old Bible Students literature, that Charles Russell or later Watch Tower leaders did not realise that BCE years count backwards. (Though it did take them several decades to realise there was no 'year 0'.)

    @jeffro

Thanks, but perhaps some moron did get the dates the wrong way around in their mind and didnt actually bother to check. They matched the wrong number with the wrong event.
