OK so if the Bible is nothing more then a pagan religious book, then how do all of you that think this, think we got here? And Please don't tell me you believe in evolution

Crazyguy. You sound quite young my friend.

However.......................This is a self defeating question with the parameters for the answer not including evolution.

Myself. I don't know how we got here. It doesn't matter. We will die and be gone forever. If some part of us does survive we'll find out.

All religions have their own 'truth'. All people have their own 'truth'.

At the end of the day it's all down to our personal 'confirmation bias'.

My thoughts are that thinking outside of the box and not going along with any crowd is best.

"How do you think we got here" is a vague question too, from where to now are you asking about ? From LUCA till today ?

or further back and delving in to Abiogenesis ? or further back still and looking at the origin of the Universe ?

Have you ever stood next to two people from a foreign country who were talking to each other and it all sounded like gibberish?

    For YOU it IS.

Open any book on advanced mathematics and you'll see things that mean nothing--literally nothing---to YOU.

Is the real problem the demonstration of a FACT such as WHATEVER YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND is actually nonsense?

Or, is it more likely that two people talking to each other in a foreign language can understand each other because they KNOW the language?

Is it more likely that the math book contains actual information, procedures, equations, technology OTHERS who have MASTERED the procedures find extremely useful in a practical way?

We are like cave dwellers standing outside our cave in the night staring up at the stars and--in our primitive imaginings--we are seeing campfires in heaven.

Why? It is too easy to take what little we think we know and use it to explain what is incomprehensible to our mind.

Instead of criticising science as a NON-SCIENTIST...why not take the trouble to master the basics?

We can't evaluate knowledge from a position of non-information without a point of leverage.

Curiousity, fact gathering and analysis have been embodied in the Scientific Method. TESTABLE hypothesis has produced all the advances in civilization for the last several hundred years.

What has religious ignorance given us to advance our life except an unprovable and a stagnant mind without any methodology to move forward?

    Crazy:

Do you really believe the Bible is gods word when

    - it tells us people get sick beause of demons ?

    - that women are below men ?

    - that slavery is gods will ?

This clown will just be back to say "that's not what I asked! Waaa waaa waaaa"

The OP was very facepalm-inducing, but I'm not sure whether to blame him for his ignorance, or try to help. We have all tried to help him on this thread, though not sure it will help. That quote by Sam Harris is awesome! CrazyGuy, read it and consider it seriously. If you really want to live in such ignorance, perhaps the WT is the place for you.

Think about what lead you away from the WT... Was it not incontrovertible evidence? Follow that path where it leads. And don't tell me you believe in the bible, even the experts are finding flaws with it.

Why doesn't crazyguy answer questions asked of them?

Sam Harris was quoted on page 2:

"Water is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. What if someone says, "Well that's not how I choose to think about water."?..."

There are other ways of thinking about water.

I say water is one-nineth hydrogen and eight-nineths oxygen, and I am precisely correct, because I am talking about parts by weight, and Sam Harris is talking about parts by volume.

It is important to say what your frame of reference is.

If someone wants to make a blanket statement like "The Bible is not crap" they must realize that they are speaking for themselves or their group. They do not speak for all.

When I say, "The Bible is crap" I am speaking for myself and for others who, like me, do not see the Christian holy book as the inspired word of god.

Jews have no use for the "New Testament."

Most of the other religions in the world do not think the bible is special

Many historians think the bible is an imaginary guide to a world that NEVER existed.

Just because you grew up in a society that hails the bible as the inerrant word of god does not mean that everyone shares your reverence. Even if everyone did share that reverence, if the bible isn't congruent with historical and scientific facts, it does not deserve the respect of intelligent people.

He is probably a troll, but these kinds of discussions are good anyway because many people lurk here, reading but not commenting. For ever Crazyguy there are a lot more people who have questions, but are afraid to post them, because some here are harsh on those who dare say they don't believe in evolution, or don't get a concept. Not every ex dub has to opportunity to go back to schooll, the time or ability to study the subject. So Crazy guy is doing us a favor, in a way.

I do think that some are overlooking another answer/response which simply says:

"Could there be a middle ground?"

Are belief in the Bible and science/evolution mutually exclusive? Why can't a person say that he wants to live his life based on the values and tenets of the Christian Bible, the words of Jesus, etc. and leave open to discovery and discussion how much is myth, legend, fact, and fiction?

Jesus is really the Son of God, and I feel his words are amazing and his teachings are wise.

    BUT ALSO COULDN'T WE SAY:

Even if Jesus was only a flesh and blood human, I feel his words are amazing and his teachings are wise.

Can't that apply to the flood, evolution, devils and demons, a higher power, etc. etc. etc.? Why have black and white, two-dimensional thinking on this? I prefer to acknowledge that I don't know all the answers and am not sure on all these things, rather than be dogmatic EITHER WAY.

    rAmen sayeth the Pastafarian!
