Catholics and Protestants in Ireland are so un-Christian in their hatred for each other that I would much rather be pagan if I lived in that country. I like fakesmile's assessment of it as religious McCarthyism. Maybe they'll bring back the Inquisition so they can absolve all the pagans, then kill them while they're still in a state of grace.

My daughter saw a bumper sticker once that sums up the attitude of some of us. It said, "Dear God, please save me from your followers."

"The people, they told us, have bought into the evils of materialism and consumerism"

Quite hilarious considering the historically massive wealth of the CC. While the Church and its leaders basked in luxury the common people starved.

I was born in Ireland, and spent the first 33 years of my life there. Your statement is a typical generalization of any religion, or nationality. Bigoted and uneducated statements like this, have inflamed and caused thousands of innocence people to suffer and die, both in Ireland and Northern Ireland, it's ignorant at best and inciteful at worst.

There is one important word that would make your statement valid, SOME Catholics and SOME Protestants are so un-Christian in their hatred for each other.

You have a blessed day :)

Pterist, I'm so sorry. I only know what I've seen on American news reports. I didn't consider it a small thing when MaiRead (sp?) Corrigan won the Nobel Peach Prize for her efforts at peace in Ireland. I also saw a report of adults harassing very small children walking to Catholic school. I also read Trinity by Leon Uris some years ago, and was heartbroken at what people, especially Catholics, were suffering.

I don't think of myself as a bigot or as ignorant or entirely uninformed. But, obviously, I have some gaps. Thank you for pointing this out to me. I'll be more careful about speaking in generalities, a practice which I abhor.

    Best wishes,

    SandraC

    So true.

One thing i do have to say about the Irish people, as a nation, the real everyday people, just like us.

They are the friendliest, most helpful, kind caring race of people, and it is a pleasure to know some of them, they are proper characters.

True christians, in the sense of, living good lives and being good to others.

People don't understand there are only 6 counties in the Northern most part of the country that has the troubles.
