While some of us can be a bit brutal at times, we've all been through exactly what you're talking about. It can be a bit brutal to hear at first, but once you see the bible for what it is, it's hard to see someone asking honest questions about the bible. The best answers they can get are still people's opinions. The bible still needs interpretation. Could the creator of the universe not write a book that we could understand?

Another poster mentioned The Atheist Experience on YouTube. For me it was watching debate after debate on YouTube with Chris Hitchens or Richard Dawkins debating theistic "scientists." Time after time the theists' arguments were dismantled in a logical fashion, then torn down.

What also helped me was reading the bible honestly. Try this: read right from Gen 1:1 with open eyes. Don't read anything into it, and don't make any excuses for it. See how many chapters you can get through before you're an atheist too.

I agree with Captain Obvious. It's a journey. I still believed in god, bible, etc. when I left JWs. Then I went to university and learned how to think critically. It didn't take long before I started seeing the bible as nothing more than an old book written by a bunch of different people.

It's really only been in the last few years that I've come to realize that I'm a complete athiest and started to see the truth in Dawkins and Hitchens and Mr. Diety. Many of my opinions and beliefs have shifted now that my eyes have opened.

Any journey that leads away from all forms of superstition is progress, even a circuitous one is good.

Blind faith in materialism as the explanation of the world could also be termed superstitious. It requires a leap of faith as with any other ideological slant.

Maybe your journey ain't over yet. May I recommend pragmatism as a more pleasant destination?

You know people even after all these years and everything I've been through I am still technically an agnotisic. I went through my athiestic period. The universe is complex and simple at the same time! Maybe in a million years my progeny will be able to know for sure, and then maybe not.
