i had a schoolteacher like that once.

of course in those times and places the local priest had immense power and prestige and any jw special pioneer parachuted into these often isolated places would be pictured as satan personified, ala "apostates" of WT parlance.

The kids would stare at us in couriosity, a big smile was the best & disarming gesture, we were human after all.

Even in modern days, let us underwhelm them.

The Splanes probably misjudged the intend of the children, projecting their own hostility into them.

Not unlike the WT today who totally misunderstand the nature of the "stand aside" movement.
