In Zions Watchtower 1896 December 15 th, Russell's comment on an article in the N.Y Observer which rightly cast doubt on the imminent formation of a Jewish State in these words:

"1t would seem, then, that the hoped-for 'restoration' may never

come, and that although Palestine will again become cultivated

and prosperous, to the Jews it may alwavs be a land of promise."

    Russell wrote:

"The italics are ours and point out the hopelessness of Israel's cause from the human standpoint. We admit that the Observer's views and reasonings are clear and logical: but it has omitted the most important factor in question, namely the will and plan of God.

That will and plan, as revealed in God's Word, teaches us to expect that within eighteen years the "times of the Gentiles" will expire, and that with their expiration Jerusalem will cease to be trodden down by the Gentile kingdoms -that the set time to favor "Jacob" with Millennial blessings as the first-fruits of the nations will then have come, and that it will include their saving or recovery from the blindness which came upon them nationaIly, at their rejection of Messiah. Who can question this interpretation of the prophets in the light of the Apostle's testimony in Romans 11 :25-33?"

(Notice "within eighteen years" i.e 1914, he predicts a Jewish State, peopled by Jews converted to Christianity, and claims this (failed) prophecy is from God !)

Very different from the impression today's Watchtower likes to give as to what Russell and his followers expected 1914 to bring.

Try to get any JW who claims "They were right about 1914" to read this, and then get them to research when the 1914 teaching really arose.

After I posted the above, I found the following on "Meleti Veleti"s Blog, Beroean Pickets, it is nice and concise :

Expectation: Earthly Jerusalem will be restored / Time of trouble ends / Gentile Times end / image of Dan 2 to be struck on the feet / Jews forgiven by God / end of 40 year harvest
    Proposed by: C.T. Russell
    Faith: Bible Student
Based on: Seven times of Dan 7 = 2520 years (as specified by William Miller) commenced 606 B.C.E. / measurements of the Great Pyramid of Giza
What Happened: Nothing (although a world war did begin 2 months earlier)
Aftermath: 1878 was maintained as the year of invisible presence until the mid-1920's and then this was shifted to the failed year of 1914

Year for Prediction to Occur: 1918

Expectation: Another date given as the close of the harvest / Churches to be "destroyed wholesale" / sectarianism to be "dashed into oblivion"
Proposed by: Writers of the Finished Mystery (likely Clayton J. Woodworth and George H. Fisher, and edited by J.F. Rutherford)
    Faith: Bible Students
Based on: 40 year harvest commencing in 1878 (see above for that year)

    What Happened: Nothing
    Aftermath: Nothing

Year for Prediction to Occur: 1921

Expectation: Christendom will perish in three parts and in a threefold way / Babylon will fall
    Proposed by: J. F. Rutherford
    Faith: Bible Student
    Based on: Eze 5:2
    What Happened: Nothing
    Aftermath: Nothing

Year for Prediction to Occur: 1925

Expectation: Establishment of the Kingdom in Palestine / Return of the ancient worthies / Millions now living will never die / God's will done on earth as in heaven / deathblow to Babylon
    Proposed by: J. F. Rutherford
    Faith: Bible Student
Based on: Full number of Israel's jubilees completed. First Jewish colony founded in Palestine in 1874 as support.
    What Happened: Nothing
Aftermath: Rutherford reportedly said "I made an ass of myself" *** w84 10/1 p. 24;(nevertheless he later secured some very nice properties out of the doctrine, and lived a comfortable life in them) "

    Thanks "Meleti". !

This is an interesting topic, Phizzy. I've been reading through "The Time Is At Hand", written by CT Russell in 1889. The concepts of Zionism run strongly throughout and establish that what Russell expected to occur in 1914 was far different from what actually happened, and any claims WT makes saying 1914 fulfilled everything that Russell and IBSA said are categorically false and an overt misrepresentation of the facts:

    ---

    "The Time Is At Hand"

As shown in the accompanying diagram, the period of their favor, from the commencement of their national existence at the death of Jacob, down to the end of that favor at the death of Christ, A. D. 33, was eighteen hundred and forty-five (1845) years ; and there their " double " (mishnch)-the repetition or duplication of the same length of time, eighteen hundred and forty-five (1845) years, without favor began. Eighteen hundred and forty-five years since A. D. 33 shows A. D. 1878 to be the end of their period of disfavor. A. D. 33 plus 1845 = A. D. 1878. All these prophetic points in the past are clearly marked, and we should expect some evidence of God's returning favor to Fleshly Israel (" Jacob ") in or about A. D. 1878. ( p 218)

But we must remember that the year A. D. 1878 was but the turning point of returning favor to Fleshly Israel. We have already learned, from our study of "The Times of the Gentiles," that Jerusalem and its people will continue to be trodden down-controlled and oppressed by the Gentile until the Times of the Gentiles be fulfilled," and hence, though favor was due and began in A. D. 1878, the Jew will not be received back into full favor until A. D. 1914. ( p 221)

that this parallel period is eighteen hundred and forty-five years long, and that it ended A. D. 1878, we have shown clearly, we think; and that it was marked by favor is an indisputable fact.

....Now call to mind the Apostle's words which show clearly that they were cast off from divine favor, and from EARTHLY COVENANTS, STILL THEIRS, untll the fullness or complete number from the Gentiles has come in-until the end of the Gospel call-and then you will see that 1878 is a marked date, of deep interest to Spiritual Israel no less important than to Fleshly Israel. ( p223)

Interestingly, Russell took a little jab at Miller and others, not realizing that his criticisms of them would also come to describe Russell's failure Re: end -time prophesies and unrealized hopes based on speculation and ignorance.

In the Jewish harvest, there was a going forth of many to meet the Lord when all men were in expectation " of him (Luke 3 : IS), at the time of his birth, thirty years before his anointing as Messiah at the beginning of his ministry; and so there was a corresponding expectation and movement on the part of many (afterward called Adventists) led mainly by a Baptist brother named William Miller, in this country, and by Mr. Wolff and others in Europe and Asia. This culminated in the year A. D. 1844, just thirty years before A. D. 1874, when Christ the Bridegroom and Reaper finally came, as shown by the Jubilee's teaching: In this we find another striking time-parallel between these ages; for those thirty years corresponded exactly to the thirty years from the birth of the babe Jesus unto Messiah the Anointed-baptized, and introduced as Bridegroom and Reaper, at the age of thirty.-Matt. 3 : 11 ; John 3 : 29. In both cases there was a disappointment and a tarrying- time of thirty years, during which all slumbered, and only a few in each case awakened at the proper time to a realization of Messiah's presence. The great nominal mass in both houses fail to recognize the visitation, because over-charged and lukewarm, neglecting the command to take heed and watch. ( p 240, 241)

The Jubilee cycles prove that our Lord Jesus was due to be present and begin the restitution work in the fall of 1874 A. D. And the Parallelism above referred to shows that date (1874) to correspond exaaly with the anointing of Jesus as the Messiah, at the beginning of the Jewish harvest," at the first advent. The "Gentile Times" prove that the present governments must all be overturned before the close of A. D. 1914 ( p242)

An "overt misrepresentation of the facts" ? lets not mince words here, or be overly polite, they LIE LIE LIE ! and then lie again !

"The Truth is not something you have to Lie about".

    AndDontCallMeShirley

I'll add that the modern WT Society has continued Russell's tradition, in that WT enthusiastically highlights the failures of other religions, and uses this to "prove" they are not the right religion, while WT inevitably becomes guilty of the very same errors- but excuses them under the guise of "we're only human and make mistakes...but we're still the only right religion chosen by Jehovah".

lets not mince words here, or be overly polite, they LIE LIE LIE ! and then lie again !

After an Elder I knew was caught in bald-faced lie, his fellow Elders defended him with the excuse, "he didn't lie...he just mishandled the truth!"

    Gotta love WT semantics.

Yes, I didn't embezzle, I just "mishandled" thousands of dollars.

The WT and its minions have a way with words, a wicked, deceptive false way.
