I went to a jw funeral today. It was the worst ever. About two minutes talking about the life of the deceased and the rest about the Borg. They use people even after they are dead.
The speaker even used the occasion to guilt some inactive ones in the audience.
It's all part of the outline they HAVE to go by.
I dont think the part about inactive ones was in the outline. The speaker basically said that if they wanted to see the deceased in the resurection any who were qualified couldnt be inactive in the ministry. Something like that. Basically a threat
I recently went to a funeral service at a Catholic Church. The service was ceremonial and ritualistic. The priest spoke about the gospel account of the resurrection of Lazarus, and the hope for a heavenly resurrection. He even came down the pulpit for the "peace unto you" part (which i thought they got rid of with the last Pope) and blessed both of my children. The only words that were personal were spoken by my cousin while we were waiting for my grandmother to be interred. That was it. Except for this portion, there was no difference. Basically, if you're looking for a personal experience, make sure you make it to thewake. DDon't wait for the funeral service. Just my thoughts. ....
I told mrs hoser that I want no funeral service when that time comes. I just have to figure out a way to enforce it.

He might as well have popped open a new case of indulgences that he just happened to be able to offer at a discount, courtesy of the mother church.
And when they talk about the deceased, they are simply reading the same damn thing as the obituary in the newspaper. And considering how poor some of these speakers are at reading, it sounds stilted as hell. Why not just bring the newspaper up to the podium ("and in Sports, the Dodgers are up 3 to 2 over the Cardinals in the playoffs. 10% sale on all jewelry at Zales!")

That's why although I will have to eventually since some old JW friends are quite ill, I never want to go back to one of those. I worry my husband might feel the guilt since his mind is not as sceptical and 'poisoned' as mine.
I attended a high church catholic funeral and it was more about the priest than the deceased. Shameful. You see, the parish priest begged off with a cold so one was called from out of town. We all heard about how the visiting priest was put-out and how he didn't know anything about our friend who had passed away. The only salvaged part is when her daughter got up to speak.
Sorry you had to endure that. You deserve a permanent break from the madness.
