thanks for the responses so far. Its ironic. I live in a border US city, and at our hockey games, both the US, and Canadian national anthems are played. Acording to WT reasoning, by standing respectfully for both the US and Canada anthems means I am allied with both of them? Even if you are a patriotic American and If you go to a foreign country like Brazil and go to a soccer game there, and stand while their National Anthem is sung, does it mean you are now loyal to Brazil? If you are loyal to "Gods kingdom" and stand during your anthem, does that mean you are not loyal to it?

This is just another example of WT legalism and excessive rule making. Also its another way to make witnesses become outcasts from the rest of society, just like no Cross, no B-Days, holidays, etc and so on.

So if the Three Hebrews had been tying their shoes when the music began.....

I used to cringe when we remained seated, I just didn't see the point of seeming so disrespectful. You often heard people whisper 'disgusting'.

I always stood after reading about the JW children in India that the Watchtower or Awake mentioned as standing respectfully for the national anthem.

    Does anyone recall this?

It was a very long time ago.

One of the most uncomfortable JW moments I experienced was because of this "don't stand" new light.

My employer was disabled and I was often called on to help him get to various events.

So we go to Santa Anita for the horse races.

He is a member of the swanky Turf Club. We are setting at a table with his friends. The Anthem starts and everyone stands except me and he is across from me in his wheelchair. He looks at me and motions with a head move and a frown for me to stand, I gave him a very small head shake, "no".

Ever get one of those mortified moments when your vision closes down to a dark tunnel ?

He never brought it up later.

As far as escaping from the predicament on a pretense, I think one should use their own judgement. Being surrounded by a bunch of good 'ol boys with a few beers in them might be a good time to go for a pee.

PS I now not only stand but I put my hand on my heart. When the flag is saluted, my voice is loud and clear.

Put this question to them ...when a JW is in a courtroom and the baliff says, "All rise for the honorable judge court is now in session," do JWs stand up? Also tell them to read this verse
    (Romans
13:5-7)5 There is therefore compelling reason for YOU people to be in subjection, not only on account of that wrath but also on account of [YOUR] conscience. 6 For that is why YOU are also paying taxes; for they are God’s public servants constantly serving this very purpose. 7 Render to all their dues, to him who [calls for] the tax, the tax; to him who [calls for] the tribute, the tribute; to him who [calls for] fear, such fear; to him who [calls for] honor, such honor.

Exactly. Standing is a sign of respect and recognition of authority. -Nothing more.

JW's are expected to stand like everyone else when a judge enters the courtroom and nobody thinks that is an act of worship or allegiance

absolutely - refusing military service, no blood- designed to force committment with the iron fist of shunning enforcing it all.

    This org. is evil.
