I think a better way to explain it as the cruelty of inaction, is that parents stand by and do nothing as their children die.

Ah indeed, and you proved my point thoroughly. Using hyperbole and being overly dogmatic are what NOT to do when talking to a JW about their beliefs. Saying things like "your cult kills children" just puts you in the same category as the individuals whom you might be trying to help.

I would like to add that Jws are brave at times. Some lose their lives for the faith. Sadly it's 99.9% percent unnecessary.

The main theme of my book, "I Wept by the Rivers of Babylon," consists of the difference between

the "con" of Watch Tower theology and the "science" of making knowledgable decisions on your own.

Conscience is the essence of the individual thinking for themselves.

Integrity is matching your actions to your beliefs and your words seamlessly.

Since the time of Judge Rutherford, JW's have no real decision-making without the shun-gun to the head for intimidation.

Coercion is nothing less than forced compliance.

The result and the cost of being cornered is to flip the switch "off" and do as you are told which destroys you as a real person with a rational mind.

This is also what makes it so easy to shun former loved ones, friends and relatives; there is "nobody home" in your own heart.

Now THAT'S a statement that contains moderation, logic and truth. You get the person thinking "hmm he knows I believe in my faith firmly, but has concluded that my zeal is misplaced. why?", and then you've opened the door to a disscussion.

The art of persuasion is certainly something else again, and nobody is likely to change their beliefs while they feel under attack (A person's defensive mechanisms cut in under those circumstances).

There is a place on this forum, though, for also venting ones own feeling and frustrations: - "getting if off your chest" as the saying goes. This forum is not necessesarily only about helping those still in the JW religion, so I would not be too hard on Phizzy!

As to whether or not it takes moral courage to kill ones own children:

    - as has often been observed "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good persons to do nothing."

Moral cowardice can also be exhibited in the passive (it is perhaps even most oftenexhibited in this form).

I know it is a broken record for sure, but I think speaking directly to the natural person helps- jgnat

Keep saying it. It's far more important than clever refutations of their doctrines.

Yes, because people are robots that can be forced to change their views by inputting contradictory facts. Thank God we don't have emotions like pride and fear and stuff like that.

I'm waiting to hear anecdotes of how at Bethel you had to stare at a daily text on your plate while your stomach rumbled. A lot of wood fibre. A lot of opiates and sedatives and pablums and waiting for Guffman trickling in your ear. Nothing to feed your hunger for some authentic human experience.
