Nathan, Amen to dumbing down among the Witnesses! Don't get too used to any rule b/c it will change with time or caprice. There is no doubt that the posession of an iPad creates divisions based on class status. So much of America's answer is to dumb down. We are a culture of the ignorant.

When I was young, I learned of a culture where Shakespeare and other classics were celebrated, education was a good and moral thing, that prepared citizens for a role in society. Yet in the ghetto and at the KH, ignorance was applauded. One needed good grades to make a good show for the Witnesses yet pity you if you were proud of your achievement.

These devices are important to the future. Literate people use them. Perhaps sister on disability but can pioneer up steep hills stumbled me with her chosen poverty. People laugh at my vocabulary which is not remarkable yet my mother would punish me if I ever showed disrespect by laughing at those who cannot pronounce standard English.

I have a basic Northern European name. Generations of Americans, British, French, and others used my name. Since I moved back to the ghetto, people find it strange and funny. If I laughed at their names, I would likely be beat up.

we just had that Body of Elders letter read last night.

The electronic devices ARE now allowed, although the scriptures should be read from an actual bible.

There was NOTHING said about stumbling others wish people wouldn't adlib.

In closing, it is a conscience matter. period.

i thought of the same thing - when people with computers could print out all the scriptures for the WT study and they would have the papers in their hands and be able to read the scriptures instantly. The computer-less could not stand it. So after a great deal of whining and complaining and dirty sideways looks, the elders began to say it just wasn't as spiritual to read a scripture from a paper - it had to be from the bible directly.

But i thought it was good because they were using a LOT of paper for nothing.

(I know some the members of the GB Use Them)

Rules are changed when members of the Governing Body want to participate.

    NO electronic devices

.... GB: Oh, these aren't tools of the Devil afterall, I like it ... NEW RULE

    NO BLOOD FRACTIONS!

.... GB: So Doc, you're saying I need this operation and blood fractions could save my life ... NEW RULE

    NO TRANSPLANTS! It's cannibalism!

.... GB: Turns out a kidney transplant would free me from dialysis ... NEW RULE

Good call mindnumbed. It is a "pick and choose" conscience thing. Like another posted about printed Scriptures, a few may "use the Bible" but be reading from their tablet.

In the end, it will stumble a few people attending, especially if the tablets seem to be iPad 2s instead of modest, sufficient, ones.

The GB will eventually sell indulgences if they need the cash, so why ban electronic devices? What other religions accomplish through healthy, honest discussion, the WTBTS is forced to adopt through the dummining of the flock and the passage of time coupled with their own inepetitude and legalism.

I don't own or use a tablet. I won't be using the Bible either. I just sit and gaze off into space and when they ask why I don't follow along I reply, "Because I don't own a tablet, and if the eldubs and sister eldubs don't have to use their Bibles then neither do I!"

I did the same thing years ago when PC printouts were frowned upon and some still insisted on using them instead of the Bible. I just quit carrying my Bible and said it was because I wanted to follow the "suggestions" of the slave and not use PC printouts, but I wasn't going to carry a Bible if no one else was.

I have to admit I like to tweak people a bit just to stir things up.

My congregation has quite a few people on Gov't assistance

Mine too. However they are all the ones who have the latest gadgets for some reason. I can't seem to ever find the extra finances to buy those new shiny toys with my full-time work.
