It's actually a good conversation starter: "I've lived under a totalitarian regime!" And they're really interested cuz they think you've lived in N Korea or something!

I personally wouldn't say JWs are living in a "totalitarian regime". Authoritarian hierarchical pyramid scheme, maybe. LOL.
The reason is that in a totalitarian regime the autocracy controls every aspect of life including art, education, economics, and social interactions. The Jehovah's Witness structure TRY to be totalitarian. They certainly WANT to be totalitarian. They give such an effort in PRESENTING their being totalitarian. Everything from home schooling to janitorial businesses says they so desperately want to be totalitarian in thought and movement, but in reality they are not.
The leaders of the church have no real control over what the individuals on the ground level do. There is a false presentation of “free will” that traps people into thinking they participating because they want to, when in actuality the repetition has numbed them into submission. At any time a person can come to their senses and do whatever the hell they want... just as long as they don't get caught.
And if they do get caught... even in the worst of sins (child molestation, for example) there is still a place for them no matter what.
It's an authoritarian cult trying to be totalitarian by tricking the participants into thinking they are in a free will theocracy... at best.
