Genital Mutilation - Is anyone watching this?

  UK Chanel 4 " The Cruel Cut". Right here, right now. In the UK in black and Asian communities female genital mutilation(FGM) or destruction of the clitoris and the labia of young girls is practised. This horror is common in the UK, it is illegal and has been for 28 years but there has not been one prosecution.

  This got me thinking. Is male circumcision a sexual mutilation, an abuse in the same way? The programme stated that this has been practiced for 2500 years. Did it go on in Bible times? Are there bible references to it that slide under the radar? Was it just young male children that were mutilated. Should we be outraged that baby boys were cut without anaesthetic?

  I feel furious that FGM goes on now, in this country to kids in our streets, in our schools.

  of course it's sexual mutilation and abuse. it's sick. it should be outlawed and it is outlawed in several western countries already. it should be an outrage indeed.

  Genital Mutilation regardless of gender should be illegal. Off course male circumcision is common among the established religions, if female circumcision would be established (as it is in portions of Africa), it would likewise be legal and commonly accepted (as is the case in portions of Africa). Both are despicable and backwards and remove a lot of the sensory inputs from the genital organs. The Biblical circumcision is taken over from Egyptian and other Mesopotamian religious practices that circumcised men to indicate eg. priesthood.

  Yep - What right does anyone have to unnecessarily circumcise a child without its consent? It is a violent sexual assault on an infant.

  Male and female circumcision is NOT the same thing. Female circumcision removes a sexual ORGAN. Male circumsicion removes foreskin.

  These things do not compare. And for the longest time, parents circumcised their sons because doctors deemed it more hygenic and safe, preventing future infections.

  The infection thing is has nothing to do with the historical practice of male circumcision, same is said for female circumcision.

  There is a sensory diference is in the male as well.

  They are both unessesary mutiliations. It has been medically proven in modern times.

  I know a child whose heart stopped during circumcision. He had brain damage and is now disabled.

  These things may not compare, of course FGM is harmful in a much more destructive way, as it prevents a woman from experiencing sexual pleasure, and its much more painful and damaging. However, many people are concluding that male circumcision is also harmful and unnecessary. The science is conflicting, with some studies show it protects against the transmission of HIV. Circumcision used to be the default choice, I had my son circumcised, as a JW, it was expected, even though not a requirement. That has changed somewhat, my grandson was not circumcised, it wasn't even brought up by the pediatrician. I have mixed feelings, I think it a personal decision.

  While the degrees may not be the same, the name and purpose are the same for males and females. Genital mutation is intended to dull sexual pleasure.

  "Wow what a beautiful baby boy! He's almost perfect. You know what would make him even better? We should cut the skin off the tip of his penis! That'll do it."

  There are still in this day and age JWs who think it is more hygienic to circumcise. To this I always reply, "why? Did god make a mistake when he designed the penis? Did he accidentally put too much skin on?"

  All that being said, FGM is disgraceful. It should be illegal, along with every other practice religious or otherwise, that is harmful to people who observe them and their children.
