Sorry, no oath there. Nothing ceremonial.

Only a question is done in private before the announcement: "Is there anything in your personal/family life that would disqualify you?" This applies to MS appointments as well. If you answer yes, the appointment is aborted.

Maybe you heard something about the Poverty Oath that Bethelites make. That is true, but for Bethelites, not for elders.

They have a secret book though, they must promise not to show it to anyone, not even their wives or children. There is no oath as such, but the book and the secrecy is an oath of sorts.

I am female, but I have the book, an elder gave me a copy. So they break the rules anyway.

I was an elder for 20 years. No oath! But you did become part of a very elite group of "yes men". That's probably why I'm here because I would no longer say 'yes' when NO was the appropriate answer.

I heard that you go into a room with some of the guys and that they cut your finger and make you say an oath. Then they burn a picture of a saint in your hands and...oh...wait, that's the Cosa Nostra.

    Never mind.

When a recommendation is accepted by the WT, the Cobe assigns 2 elders to ask the brother 2 questions namely:

Question # 1: Is there anything in your personal life that can disqualify or prevent you from accepting this privilege?

Question #2: Is there any reason why your appointment should not be announced to the congregaion?

There is a third question for any brother that has never served before and that is to protect them from future lawsuits.......

Question #3: Have you ever sexually abused a minor in your life?

The last question is to be asked only if they have never served before and it's the first time getting appointed. The 3rd question was added some 4-5 yrs ago.

That's the closest the WT gets to doing a background check on their leaders
