The Society has certainly had their share of financial setbacks, especially in the pedophile department. The Legal Department must actively save face and do damage control!

I can't help but wonder how many WTS attorneys are flying around to be present at Estate Hearings, bequeathment hearings, probate Court, reading of wills, etc. this has got to be a huge cash cow for them, even though most Witnesses live "modest lifestyles."

I also wonder how much outsourcing the legal department does. It seems like it would require a lot more brainpower than the "volunteer corps" has to offer.

Does anybody here know anybody there?

    just curious

I know with the Conti and Campos cases, that the legal work was out sourced.

Joe134: for sure? That's the kind of thing that really makes me wonder. Here in such a public venue as a million dollar lawsuit, they hire sharks to protect them.

stillin I am in agreement with you

WTBTS is a lawyers cash cow.

The amount of litigation they create is absurd and $$$$$$$$$$

I know that on lower profile issues they frequently use the services of local JWs who are attorneys. I suspect they volunteer their services to Mother.

Years ago my wife and I had our will written such that our estate would be divided into equal parts per child and the WTS. This is how it will stay as long as my wife remains active. I still have to wonder if there are any stories involving disbursements in a situation like this. If the WTS is using lawyer.com to gather up crumbs for them, I wonder whether they are compensated as a percentage of the total "take." This would tend to make an attorney look for ways to do what they do best.

If my kids end up having to "lawyer up" against big shot attorneys, well, everybody loses.

    Stillin,

I have no idea how they set up their Legal Department. There are routine financial matters. It appears that the Conti appeal is outsourced. When I did corporate law, the corporations became tired of paying huge fees to large firms so they took their basic, everyday matters in-house. Outside firms were only used for matters of complexity. My guess is that they read management magazines/blogs about how to best use legal talent.

I can only repeat what my Trusts and Estates prof told us in class. Trusts and Estates has the highest malpractice rate. It is complex. This is not the area to scrimp on lawyers. I would only see a specialist. My prof put the fear of the Lord in me. I would not do a simple will. Besides the Trusts and Estates legal questions, you have to know federal and state tax law. I don't understand how general practice lawyers do it. Perhaps the cases they do are very simple.

Botr, that pretty much affirms my fear that WT lawyers might very well look for ways to back my children down. Obviously, my trust in that bunch is ( justifiably) next to nothing. I had another dialog with them and it left my head spinning. I thought, "are these brothers or not?"

I would imagine with the conti case particularly, with the appeals process, it would be a very specialised field, and if team watchtower knows what is good for them they won't be skimping on attorney fees. When I was telling a following brother about the issues they were having with sex abuse, his reply was " oh I'm sure their legal department will sort it out". I then had to tell him that this wasn't the case as they had hired an outside leagal team. Poor brother just had no idea.
