I know of no Witness who sat on a mountainside waiting. Frankly, that story sounds like an urban myth. However, I do know of Witnesses who quit well-paying jobs to work part time and pioneer, absolutely convinced they would not have to pioneer long because the end was so close. Oh, there were a couple of local instances of families who sold their homes and used the proceeds to support family pioneering. While the organization did not tell Witnesses directly to do these sorts of "sell up" things, it praised to the high heavens those who did, never once advising mature caution.
JWs took off from work in 1975?

So sad I heard HQ's was buying property and expanding during this time. New presses etc. I think freeminds has talked a lot about it.

I received an email from a man who was a boy in 1975. The father bought a campervan and the family spent 1975 living in the mountains waiting for Armageddon.

We had JW friends that ran up their credit cards and bought new cars in 1973-4, knowing that they would never have to pay them off. The wife, later left him for his bible student and is no longer a dub. The husband is still a sort of dub and got remarried to a woman half his age. LOL

I agree that the mountain top does not sound very JW. Of course, my mom's account is from a long time ago. It may have been Bible Students. Miller's believers went to a mountain top or mountain tops. Perhaps it is the imagery from the Bible of mountain tops as scenes of sacred activity. Mt. Sinai comes to mind. The JW mode appears to be donating money to the world wide work and pioneering. Where could one flee from Armageddon? Jehovah will strike you down wherever you go. He has good eyes. Look how he noticed Adam and Eve. Jehovah is far worse than the NSA! I just zoned out on Armageddon talks. They were so depressing. Were Witnesses supposed to have special protection during the Great Tribulation? Maybe b/c I was so afraid I simply did not hear details. None of this is scriptural.
There are always some who go to excess. Another trend was that the most zealous ones would study the prophecies and come up with their own variants of the WT doctrines and prophecies.

All that I personally knew of was people quitting their jobs or college/school and Pioneering. I know of many that bought new cars and houses, heavy credit card use, etc, expecting to stiff the banks when the "end of the world in 1975" would happen.

I knew one family in Sydney that sold everything up, the husband left a good job etc, etc to go pioneering.
I've heard rumours that the names of the family's children were on an XJW list some ten or so years ago - so the (new) world did end for them.

But what's new? This stupid sort of "faith" in Jesus' failed promise to return has been misleading humans for centuries.

I sold my lucrative business to a brother that never paid me, moved to
Belize and later to where the need is great, 1972-1973. My sister called
all the non-JW family members together and told them, this is your
last opportunity to be saved (1974). My mom told her, no one knows
the time. My sister, the signs are clear the end next year.
My family still get a big laugh from that.
