Aude- We had the "countdown" going on in our KH. The Overseer would make monthly announcements. I was a young pioneer and the School Overseer then. One pioneeer buddy from another congregation would mouth the same stuff- so many months till the Big A.

The other big, and really odd thing, was buying Term Life Insurance

Crazy times and yes many in the circuit, big time elders and extended families sold their homes and moved to "where the need was great". Nothing like running up points on the scoreborad to impress Brooklyn.

Designs, I remember the talks at the KHall, and from the Circuit Assemblies at Leimert Park.

Dodger Stadium, I personally do not remember specific talks about 'stay alive until '75', because I was tired at the District Conventions from working,

pioneering , and rubber necking to see all my friends and then 'visiting' with them.

As a baptized JW, I was an 'ordained minister' not of the, wanting to sit and listen to everything because I want to grow up to be a Bible scholar persuasion.

I wish I had a tape of the talks that scared us into action. We would be blood guilty if we 'did not warn the Nations!'

"There are only ___ (insert number of months) until the end of 6,000 years of man's existance . The Great Tribulation and Armageddon are so close. Now is the time to take action before this world and all of its wickedness is destroyed".

About 25 years ago, the 'encouraging' talks started with, "Wouldn't you and your Family all like to be pioneering when this fear inspiring day of Jehovah strikes?" clapclapclapclapclap Was the resounding applause.

How much money through fear and intimidation had JW's given over to the WT GB in the past 100 years with their wishy washy flip flops?

After all the WT GB JW.ORG tell us 'in the Last Days people will be throwing their money in the streets'. (What they do not tell you is they want you to tell them what street YOU live on, so you can give it to THEM) Greedy Basturds.

Lois- we all could kick ourselves in the pants. Watching Fred Franz goose step walk off the podium at Dodger Stadium or hearing Knorr rant for hours at Anaheim Stadium. We saw all the marks of psychos in action and sat there like dummies lol

I know of a couple of Kiwi families that sold up and bought motorhomes so that they could spend the last days pioneering. They were still living in their buses years after Jehovah forgot to show up.

Maybe he went to the mountainous areas to stay away from the government oppressors who were going to ban religion.

Sounds plausible to me. Dubs did really crazy things in that year.

Dubs did really crazy things in that year.

That they did. In fact, my overpowering memories of those years 1972 - 1975 are of mad people and mad times.

Our congregation was then deemed to be in an area "where the need is great." As a consequence, we had so many families arrive from elsewhere:

    - ones who had sold their homes and invested everything in a large caravan, there to live for the "few remaining months of this system."

The novelty seemed to wear off rather quickly, though - particularly when the local council's health inspector discovered some of these families living in rather insanitary conditions, and ordered them to be evicted. (Things wouldn't have been too comfortable, either, once the southern winter set in!)

As for people going crazy with their credit card etc. :

    - to be honest, I never knew of one single instance of that happening.

Selling ones home and going pioneering for the "few remaining months of this system" was certainly typical, though.

Mad religious people of any denomination can only ever go in one of 2 directions - and sometimes both: Madder or out. Madness is not a good quality in anyone - but in religious people in paints the zealot as a priviledged seer, but with the condition that the madman/woman soon implodes. While the earth never ends, mad religious zealots certainly and stunningly do end. A relief all round to sane and sensible people of any denomination.

I know of a lot of couples who chose not to have children in the 70's because the end was "so close", very sad when they grew too old to have children,

At our hall, the Congregation Servant (Pre elder arrangement) posted a countdown on the "News Board". The Circuit "Servant" told him to take it down....anyway, the Congregation Servant and his wife bought a 27 foot travel trailer around that time and lived in it. They lived in that travel trailer until he died about 30 years later. They "kept it simple".

Designs, Do you remember the morning going to The Angel Stadium of Anaheim, with heavy fog?

A loaded down station wagon almost made it to The Stadium but got into a deadly crash. A whole family died. It was hard to focus on the "special' talk.

The part I remember was it seemed (?) like the GB were just asking or telling us to donate (?) money that in Southern California, everyone had it so easy (?) and were so prosperous (?) that if we did not empty out our pockets, we were showing a 'bad attitude', and we were not showing a kind and generous spirit of love and generosity to the less (?) fortunate. If we gave of ourselves and our money... Jehovah would richly bless (?) us.

After that talk, I did notice the contribution boxes. People were surrounding them and stuffing them like fish in a pond when you throw them fish food. I have never seen anything like it before or since.

I did overhear someone talk about the family that died. "That maybe it was easier for the family to go now, that they wouldn't have to put up with the uncertainties of the great tribulation... blaw , blaw , blaw and anyway, they have nothing to worry about. They will get a resurrection". FacePalm
