I have returned food when it has been unsatisfactory or when it has not been as described. I find if the complaint is valid and you are clear about what you want done to resolve the issue there is no problem. If you do not get angry but remain polite then there is really no cause for afront.

If you do not return bad food, the resturant will never know they have a problem. Good restaurants would rather have a chance to get it right than have you go away unhappy and never come back. As long as you are polite it shouldn't be a problem. We frequent a pub that is around the corner, the food is usually quite good, so if it's not, I let them know, they are very good about it. Sometimes the owner will comp us food without us even saying anything, she can tell when we aren't thrilled with something. We got a free breakfast once because she thought the kitchen took too long. You do get people who are not happy with anything, and sometimes the restaurant has to push back, but that is not that common.

Thanks for your comments, some people can be overly self concious, but take heart, it's okay to make a legitimate complaint when dining out, OUTLAW summed it up. Just don't be rude! Kate xx

I am on a restricted diet. A sugar pop for example, is 200 calories that I don't need and indeed can make me quite sick. So I will always point that out. Also, gravy on potatoes specifically turned down, or fries instead of the ordered tomato slices. If the mistake makes no difference I don't speak out.

We eat out at least once a week, we have sent back food that was simply not right, or we make a gentle complaint after if it is simply asmall problem. We are never rude, and are especially respectful of waiting staff, they do not produce the food.

We also Tip the waiters/esses generously, they work for peanuts, and , a bit selfish, but if you do so, they reallly look after you in future !

In the U.K many are reticent about complaining about bad food or service, we really need to do it more, if justified, to raise the standard.

The really funny time that comes to mind was when we had really terrible service, food was just about acceptable, service scored Nill Point, so we refused to pay the bill, the girl, yes girl !, in charge, threatened to call the Police, we said, go ahead, eventually she came back to plead for a resolution, we said we would pay half of the bill.

Harsh ? yes maybe, but I bet they upped their service after that. We didn't go back, needless to say, don't want Gob in my food.

Depends. If it's truly bad/cold/frozen, then I'll send it back. I like steak rare, if steak comes to me medium-rare then I'll take it. If it comes out charred and chewy, I'll send it back.

If restaurant people will spit in your food, they will do so regardless of whether you send it back. This is a management and respect issue which will be reflected in quality, if you get consistently underperforming food, you simply don't eat there.

Restaurants in the UK where I live, want to put things right on the day. They depend on repeat business. They would rather change a meal and keep their regular customers, than have people smile and pretend all is well, then never dine there again.

So, yes, I will politely sort out a problem with the restaurant, there and then. I want to keep the standard high and return again. On the rare occasions I have asked for something to be re-done, the waiters have been fantastic.

Sometimes a free drink is given for the inconvenience. But then England is such a civilised country - civilized to you lot.
