Do You Dine out? If so do you return unsatisfactory food?

    Gladiator,

Yes I mentioned the free drink compensation in a post. If the complaint is legitimate they fall over themselves to treat you like royalty. Commendation goes a long way too if you are regular. Good tips like phizzy says are a bonus too. Kate xx

I think you have to have realistic expectations - it's not sensible to expect a perfect steak if you're at a cheap pub so the standard for returning food somewhat depends on where you are. If you're at a posh steak-house then you generally should expect to get it just how you ordered it.

I'm a big believer at ordering a meal that suits the establishment. By that, I mean that if I'm at a cheaper pub then I should order hearty pub food, not something fancy that may be on the meny but may be stretching the skills of the staff who likely work there.

Also separating the server from the food is important - you should always be polite even if you're complaining as they are far more likely to help you and ultimately have to argue your case to the kitchen staff so you want them on your side. So you should give a good tip even if you've had to complain about the food (as long as it wasn't the servers delay that caused it to be cold for instance).

I agree, the Grosvner Hotel is far different from Weatherspoons. Do you remember them from Manchester Simon?

    Good point.

Simon That's an important consideration - how much are we paying. We can't expect more than we pay for.

In cheap eating places I avoid hotpot meals that are reheated due to a few stomach upsets. I go for say, freshly fried gammon & chips with pineapple. You can tell I'm not Muslim.

Good question...If my food arrives and it is NOT what I ordered, then I will politely mention, "This must be for someone else's table. I didn't touch it. I had ordered....."

If it is what I ordered and not prepared correctly, I take it on the chin, send it back and eat bread or share with my wife. NEVER, I repeat, NEVER send a plate back to a cook or chef stating that something is wrong with the dish. Unless you accompany that plate from your table to the chef and back again, you can readily assume that it will be "adjusted" in some form or other.

Yes I'll return food if it's not acceptable/really below standard, on principle, but I am polite to the waiter/waitress.

See SOP, it can be done if you're polite like Loz. Kate xx

A good rule of thumb is to never return anything to the kitchen that is covered with or contains any type of cream sauce.

If you are in a nice establishment and you are served something wrong or it has some issue - like under or overcooked steak - you need to make it known. if you want to eat it as is, go ahead, but do let the server and floor manager know about it. if they are a decent place they will do the right thing by you. if i were in a place with a seedy atmosphere, i would think twice about returning something to the kitchen - primarily because it is probably the best they can do. but if you are paying big bucks in a fancy place - they need to meet the standard expected of them.
