  IMO you need to diagnose the problem first. Why does he want to go back? Then you can select a course of action.

  For example, if he wants to return because he believes the organization is God's Channel, then you can point out LOTS of evidence proving they are not. If he believes the teachings, set about proving those false. If he misses friends, set about replacing them. etc.
