If you were a lady and you were 55 and had $5,000 or less to spend on a used car, what would buy? Top concerns: good MPG; reliable; in not having major issues like ball joints breaking, timing belts breaking, etc. Not too expensive to maintain. Comfortable, roomy enough to cart 6ft plus teenagers around in. Not rusting, etc. Where to buy.

Yes, probably something Japanese - Honda Civic, Toyota Corrolla etc...
But any older car can suddenly need a cash injection to save some major internal organ so there are no guarantees.
Thanks, Simon. The last car I drove, which I sold to the mechanic yesterday for $200, was a nightmare. I had the ball joints break twice. I had the timing belt break once and had to have the engine rebuilt. I've had a tie rod pop loose. The car jumped time and destroyed the engine. I give up. I've never had a car with such problems before. It's been dangerous. I may have more money to spend, but I'm going to see what's available in the $5,000 range. I have a friend who can get corporate, fairly low mileage Chevy Impalas, 2010, for $10,000, but another friend is discouraging that idea. HOpe to have the money this month. Meanwhile, I'll be asking for rides to work, something very hard to do.
