unstopableravens - Or verses 5-9 in matthew 4
Hi unstopableravens, If MT 22:37-38 is the greatest commandment, is it possible to love God by following the teachings and examples of Jesus Christ and applying those principles to interpet Bible verses such as MT 4-4 and MT 5-10? What is your definition of worship? My definition would be showing some form of subjugation to a deity like bowing down to Satan in MT 4:9. If we could agree with a definition of worship, that it involves some form of subjugation, and that when Jesus Christ quotes scriptures it does need to be interpreted using MT 22:37-40, then is it possible to intrepret what Jesus said in MT 4:4 and MT 4:10 to Satan as nothing more than live a moral and truthful life? If we could agree with a definition of worship involving some form of subjugation and that Jesus Christ was telling Satan to live a moral and truthful life, would you agree then that God does not want to subjugate people but wants them to live a moral and truthful life?
Mt 22: 37-38 27 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ [ c ] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
MT 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”
MT 4:5-10
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ [ c ] ”7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ [ d ] ”
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
The Bible is a difficult book to understan and people interpret it differently. I am only offering my interpretation. I hope that people interpret the Bible free from coercion by others and live a moral and truthful life.
Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,
Robert
