Do videos buffer well on your Apple?

    Greetings:

I did some research and one website acknowledges that Windows provides superior buffering of videos compared to that of Apple computers. Since I own both type computers, I have experienced this. Even newer and, might I add, very expensive Apple computers buffer videos poorly, so I have read. I've all but given up on youtube. I believe it has something to do with Adobe software.

If you have anything to add, I'd be grateful!

the short answer is that flash is crap so apple doesn't give a damn about it. If the video uses flash, it might be be weird. if it's using something like webm or h.264 like every sane website, you won't have issues.

Apple's got nothing to do with it. Adobe makes Flash. If Adobe doesn't care about making Flash run well on Macs (there are no "Apples" since 1980), then it won't run well. That's why Apple dropped Flash altogether from their iDevices. Anyway, I haven't heard of this issue before, but there's a setting in YouTube for playing videos in a non-Flash format: https://www.youtube.com/html5

Adobe does develop flash but it's not even installed on OS X out of the box. Apple doesn't really want it on your Mac :) Plus Apple doesn't really optimize its software for it. If it buffers weird in Safari, try Firefox or Chrome.

I'm sure the spat Apple had with Adobe a while ago explains why Adobe might not really care too much about it either.

Yes, it's a soured relationship for sure.

    Thank you, Apognophos and Barrold:

You've helped me more here than from what I've read and tried to figure out elsewhere.

Thanks for clarifying the difference between iMac and Apple. Both my laptop and desktop iMacs use Safari. Chrome, which works well on my Dell, cannot install on the former computers. I need outside help, perhaps . . .

    Gratefully,

holy crap. what model iMac do you have and what version of OS X is it running? If it's an Intel iMacit should run Chrome no problem.

Chrome doesn't run on 10.5 anymore, so he probably has a PPC iMac.

It could also be videos that were made in silverlight that were made for Windows PCs.

    Interesting, trillaz -- thanks!

    BB and Apo:

The ancient desktop, which looks like a little portable TV, is OSX 10.4.11; the laptop is OSX 10.5.8. Google, which may not be Chrome, is updated on the latter and functions well, whereas, on the former, Google is an older version that functions in a limited capacity and resists my efforts to update. I believe you stated why.

    Many thanks!
