Are Kingdom Songs Good for You?

I have a little theory buzzing around in the back of my mind. It was triggered by Trevors comments re the low self esteem that is endured by many JW youngsters.

I`m wondering if the singing of Kingdom Songs can actually make you feel depressed and worthless. I know it might seem a strange idea at first, but see if my reasoning doesn`t make at least some sense.

I frequently see the TV ad for Linguaphone, the language learning course, that uses your repetition of foreign language phrases spoken along with a cassette recording. The ad says: "You hear. You speak. You understand."

In other words, it is you speaking the words that imprints them in your memory.

Then of course, there are "Positive reinforcement courses" that depend on your repetition of certain phrases to make you feel, well, dynamic: "Every day, in every way, I`m getting better and better". Again, it is by you speaking the words that has the effect of altering your state of mind.

So, how about when we sing the Kingdom Songs? I have not seen inside a song book for many a year, but I well remember singing "We are Jehovahs witnesses" to a stirring tune, that made us all stick our chests out in a sort of defiance to the world in general. OK, I know it wasn`t a match for "Land of Hope and Glory" or, say, Sousa`s stuff, but nonetheless, it could alter one`s frame of mind.

But, how about some of the more subtle stuff? I remember thinking once what a lovely song "The Power of Kindness" was:

When faced with problems that perplex,
    We will very often find
    That their solution simply lies,
    In being mild and kind.

All well and good, yes, but lets look at the preceeding few lines:

How thankful we, to God should be,
    Who loving kindness shows
    To undeserving fallen man,
    As every Christian knows.

Notice the "should", a word very common in Kingdom songs and indeed, in all the societies literature. Psychologists agree that replacing the word "should" with "could", is a first step when someone wants to improve their sense of self esteem. "Should" is a major league word in the world of negative mind imprinting.

"Loving kindness" may at first seem OK, but how often are those words prefaced by the WTBTS inserting the word "undeserved" in front of them? "Undeserved loving-kindness" are 3 words that just roll of a JW`s tongue like syrupy poison, as the sub conscious mind has its sense of low esteem reinforced by the sense of being not worthy of anything that is good. Remember, Jehovahs witnesses believe that "man is only worthy of death".

Indeed, linking these 3 words together in a song proved too difficult for even the WT poetry dept, so they made sure that the phrase was brought to mind in the next line. Undeserving? Fallen? You try telling someone that they dont deserve something, and see what an irate reaction you get! "You have a lovely home. You don`t deserve it. Why are you kicking me?"

Now imagine, not just saying those words to yourself, but actually singing them out loud!

I think that I have made my point, if I was in posession of a Kingdom song book, I bet I could find lots of similar examples!

    Intersting post, Englishman.

I do however, remember wondering about my fascination with the term 'underserved loving kindness'. At one point I pulled out the concordance and actually counted the number of times that phrase occurred in scripture. If I remember correctly, it was 93 times. The writer of all 93 times was Paul, who wrote the lion's share of the Greek Scriptures.

The Society uses Paul's writings extensively--maybe this is your tie-in?

    LDH,

I cant find the phrase (undeserved-loving-kindness) anywhere in my New English Bible, please could you cite me a few examples of where the phrase appears in the NWT (I dont have one), so that I can compare applications?

    Many Thanks,

    Englishman.

    Hi Englishman.

What a great theory! Myself, I don't think that I was affected. However, I remember that I thought most of the songs sucked. Especially "We Are Jehovah's Witnesses". That song reminds me of a childish tune one would sing on the playground at school. There were a few songs I liked, but my memory of most was that they were gruesome songs making fun of the death of the world.

Remember the song with the line; "kiss the son lest he be angry, and you perish in his way", or something like that. It had this ominous cruel tune that went with it. I used to think, "what a sick song!"

Interesting thoughts. I'm sure that molding the thinking processes of a JW is very much a part of the Kingdom songs. I never really liked them much, although, of course, I sang along with everyone else. I could never understand, however, how some people would get the music tapes or cd's and play the damn things all the time even when they weren't at the Hall. Just too weird.

    Hey Lisa,

I think the idea would be similar between

    God's undeserved loving kindness
    God's undeserved kindness

Either way, we don't deserve God's kindness. Kindness can be extended to any area of his dealings with us. So we don't deserve anything but death from him.

And......we should kiss the son lest he be angry and we perish in his way.....

Yeah, pretty much sums up our attitude towards God. Paul's writings, eh? He comes under a lot of critical questioning. And you'e right, if Paul wasn't quoted by the WTBTS, there would be a lot less WT's.

    Hey Red,

I could never understand, however, how some people would get the music tapes or cd's and play the damn things all the time even when they weren't at the Hall. Just too weird.

Me too. Kingdom Melodies to play instead of watching TV. Instead of music on radio. Would seem the WTBTS's goal was to envelop our whole waking hours with them. But then, that's not weird, except if you're a control freak.

'Course, back then we couldn't sing Happy Birthday to each other - so we filled the void with "melodies." Happy Birthday, Red! Are you older than me? Hope so.

They used to have a song book that had some pretty good stuff in it. Some of tunes were from classical music with words added. Some were Protestent hyms of good quality with some word modifications. One day they decided that all these songs were of pagan origin, and threw them all out. By contrast I thought the new song book was just awful.

Yeah, except I don't accept that 117 Adams are the only people in the world who know how to make music that is spiritually inspiring....
    Some of my favorites:

    Jaci Velazquez "on my knees"
    Kirk Franklin "stomp"
    Mary Mary "praise you"
    R Kelly
    Michael White

These guys/gals all have songs that are popular and are just as uplifting as anything in the songbook.

why are so many JW's willing to accept that only JW music is 'approved by God?' Doesn't that just seem wierd?

You are soo right the music is horrible. When my niece was a baby, only a few months old, she was listening to music. She loved the music and was boppin' her little head. So mom got the bright idea to put on some kingdom melodies! Just the music mind you, and she started bawling!!! When we turned it off she stopped, turn it on she'd start crying again, as you can imagine we had to try this a few times, it was quite facinateing, poor baby. The Music is awful, to say nothing of the singing at our hall!!!

Have you heard the WTS new CD with the singing on it!OUCH!!! If you haven't you really must!!!! It had me crying. It's soooo depressing and demoralizing!! Well enough of that gotta put on some classic Rock to get the thought of that out of my head!!!
