joelbear - i love the term you used: psychological terrorism That is exactly what it is. The JWs own version of holy war.
Blondie - yer right. Even if 'gasp' they were to do away with df'ing, it would still exist and be just as incidious.

Hey Eman...
Pass me a b&t... tanx :)
ahhhh... that's the stuff...
I don't think that changing the DF policy would change the predicament the society finds itself in now... it's made slight modifications in the past and it didn't change much... The R&F would see it much like they see it now... The society will never do a 360 on dfing... never... it's too strongly entrenched, used to advantage, and would actually take at least one full generation to change it, as in all of it...
Would changing it affect those on our side of the issue?.. I don't think so... too many people have been affected by it, it's hurt too many families... it has a strong historical significance with the WT, like the blood thing... It could and would still be used against them... as it should be.
As far as solving their problems... those are fundamental... the org is built on them... their doctrine frankly sucks... their history is full of incredibly stupid mistakes, and the leadership has not been inclined to "fix" any of them... Anyone who thinks the org is not fully aware of the problems it has must be dreaming... four words.."Freddy 'the oracle' Franz"... the WT just doesn't care.... the org is not about "truth", religious or otherwise, it's a publishing house that has a quirky and unique way of "selling" it's publications. As a business, which is exactly what the WT is, it's going to be business as usual, until the profits slide...those are the only "changes" people see... where the org is vulnerable... It's cash vulnerable... and it's lawsuit vulnerable... and that's where changes are made...
The only real way to "fix" the problems is to admit fully they were wrong, and let people choose to continue with them with freedom of thought, conscience, etc.... They would have to adopt an incredible and sudden amount of tolerance... can you see them ever doing that???? They'd have to develop a "Truth and Reconciliation Committee"... and deal with the fall out... Hmmm... wonder what would happen to the publishing company if that were to happen.... There is no way the WT will ever do that... It would mean the end for them... for sure.
As for the future of the WT, I see them expanding more in the underdeveloped countries and waning in the developed ones... As the trend suggests today... The boys behind the big wooden desks know it... how could they maintain the corp. if they didn't, .... They know where their bread is buttered ... Wouldn't it be cool if in 20+ years.. they end up selling up in Brooklyn and moving their headquarters to Africa... or South America... LOL. America can become pretty expensive... just like France did... :)
So, IMHO, our teeth are safe... we will never look bad for what we're trying to do... it's only the R&F dubs who think so... just look at this site...
Thanks Eman... needed the rant... lol

Yes, an end to disfellowshipping would be enough.
Disfellowshipping is their only means of controlling information and behavior. Without this to use as a club, there would be discussion and dissention. Look at how many people leave JWs, even under the threat of DFing. There are almost as many ex-Witnesses as their are Witnesses.
The elimination of DFing would automatically make everything a concience matter.
Unfortunately, DFing could never be ended in isolation. Without their enforcement tool, the Society could not control this group under the current doctrinal system. They would need to totally re-develop the organization, in order for it to survive in a voluntary environment.
I think there are probably several times as many ex witnesses as they are witnesses.
Joel
I probably didn't explain myself too well here.
Maybe I should have asked: Would you campaign so dilligently and strongly against the society if DF'ing was abandoned?
Or would you hang up your spurs and feel that your work was done?
Or do you feel that DF'ing is just one of many issues that need to be resolved?
My reason for asking is that the anti-DF'ing thing is my own pet hate and the main reason that I left. Since leaving I have seen the light on many other things too, and there is no way that I would ever entertain becoming a part of any organised religion ever again.
However, if DF'ing was abolished, it would make life easier for my JW Mum, and I'm sure that there are many thousands of people like her who are just too old and frightened to throw their beliefs away.
Englishman.
LOL Eman....
Nope... I'd keep me spurs on... like em anyways... lol... even if DF stopped, there are still the other issues... and the pain and damage that DF has already caused, and the years of families ripped apart... having it finally done with won't fix that...
Tanx again eman...

Englishman, your heart is in the right place, but you know that they'd never, ever do anything like that, primarily because the DFing practise is one of the key things keeping the BOrganization in it's present state, bad as it may be. The Big Boys don't want an interruption in their cash-flow, now do they? Besides, there are so many other things...
"If men were like their personal ads, they wouldn't need personal ads."
E-man, no ending DF'ing would not do it for me. There are two many wrong doctrines, pig-headed policies and distorted history. They'd have to come clean and I think that would end the Borg. They will never do it, and even if they did I'd keep arguing with them.
Joel - I live the "psychological terrorism" perfect term for how they beat their flock.
Nope, an end to DF'ing is just the tip of the iceberg.
no, nothing short of total destruction>
