Whiskey bottles and brand new cars....

one little problem that confronts you

got a monkey on your back

just one more fix, lord might do the trick

one hell of a price for you to get your kicks

the smell of death surrounds you

Ronnie Vancant the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote song for his band guitariest friend Gary Rossington as a warning to take it easy. Ironic Ronnie died in a plane crash along with guitariest Stevie Gaines and backing singer Cassie Gaines all the other members of that origional band Allen Collins are now dead..ie Allen Collins guitariest, Billy Powell drums, Leon Wilkinson Bass..but Gary Rossington still lives.

My point is dont you think the world has gone crazy with dont smoke, dont eat at Mcdonalds, watch your blood pressure ect ect...

LOL, it's a great song; but it seems to bring bad luck to whichever band plays it! 3 Doors Down released a live version of it in 2005; and the rest is history from Wikipedia:

On April 20, 2013 bass player Todd Harrell was charged with vehicular homicide for his actions the night before in Nashville, Tennessee. He was reportedly driving on I-40 at a high rate of speed when he caused an accident that killed 47-year-old Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr.

Harrell's original court dates of May 28 and 29 were later postponed. The date set for 28 May for his previous DUI from 2012 was set to be continued and since Harrell had voluntarily gone into rehab at an undisclosed location and remained there the date set for court on May 29 in Nashville for his charge of Vehicular Homicide was moved to July 23.

So, though it might be decades later, people just don't learn- including me, having been charged with a drink-driving offence a few years ago...

but it's a great song, so here's the lyrics in full:

Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you

    Ooooh that smell
    Can't you smell that smell
    Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
One more drink fool, will drown you

    Ooooh that smell
    Can't you smell that smell
    Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Now they call you Prince Charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
Say you'll be all right come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you

    Ooooh that smell
    Can't you smell that smell
    Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

    Hey, you're a fool you
Stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before

One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, Lord might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks

    Ooooh that smell
    Can't you smell that smell
    Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

    Ooooh that smell
    Can't you smell that smell
    Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Trans talking about D.U.L Allen Collins who survived that plane crash lost his wife and unborn child to tragic circumstances, he then killed his girl friend D.U.I and he ended up paralized in a wheelchair and dead of the injuries 3 years later. Ironic the song was written about Gary Rossington who is the only surviver and doing just as he pleases.

Bless good ol' Lynyrd Skynyrd! Even temporary member (mr. Outlaws) Hughie Thomasson, has passed away (I am so glad I've had the chance to see him perform live several times, with Lynyrd Skynyrd and just months before he died I saw him play with the Outlaws).

I think they're just waiting for Gary to come and join the greatest Eternal Southern Rock Band that ever appeared in heaven (but the 'number isn't full' yet without Charlie Daniels)... oooo that smell...

    Btw it's Ronnie Van Zant

B- D - s ....Hughie and Medlockd were awesome in skynyrd.

I had a few beers with Mike Estes and he was typical Skynyrd....very drunk andhe told me Gary was more drunk and when he asked mike to join the band...he was very drunk...mike went with Ed King who wrote freebird..its complicated but credit for Rossington to get Medlockd and Hughie in the band that was as good as the plane crash band...

Mike Estes told me a few stories B.D.S and as you seem a Skynyrd Man.. White Dove was not written by Ricky, it was written by Shorty, Rickys pappa...oh and Ricky sings on that song not Ronnie Van- Zant

Anyway my origional post was not about Skynyrd but about life being here today and gone tomorrow...i like it that way rather than the watchtower way of living for a day that never comes...

You're absolutely right that life has to be lived and being too cautious can make that you miss out on fun things. Carpe Diem, seize the day!

And about Hughie and Ricky... they were awesome with Skynyrd. I stopped following Skynyrd after Billy Powell died. Just saw they've got a new album out, so I might check it... Nice stories from Mike Estes. I know he played on the 'Endangered species' unplugged album. And 'White dove', yeah I knew it was Ricky singing. Didn't know his dad wrote it, but it's a great song, very melodic and gentle.

And fyi I'm a Skynyrd woman hahaha. Play guitar myself and everybody around me knows me for always playing and singing Sweet home Alabama

Banja hi, did you know Gary and Allen wanted Rusty Day as lead songer for the Rossington Collins band. He turned them and A.C down. I think he was the preferrd choice for the reunion band, but i am glad Jonny got the job. He was working as a truck driver . Rusty Day and his young son of nine were shot dead over a drug deal gone wrong,

Back to Mike i met him and GIlbey Clarke at the Orient pub in Linköping Sweden. Mike was playing to less than fifty people and Gilbey to no more than a hundred. Seemed a long way to come from the states to Sweden for such small gigs. Gilbey told me he never had a big pay check with his two years in Guns and Roses. Anyway both were very friendly and humble people. Mike sure dont like Gary though,,,

Haha, doesn't surprise me. I don't like Gary very much either. He's the one with the least charisma of the whole Skynyrd-troup. One concert I had a huge banner (white sheet with a nice text on it) made for Hughie, showing it during a Skynyrd gig. Hughie seemed to be shy, sort of hiding behind Johnny. Then Ricky saw the banner and touched Hughie, while playing, with his elbow... winking my way with his head, like he was saying 'look over there!'... so Hughie looked and saw the banner and gave me a great smile . The rest of the show we constantly had eye contact, me, Ricky and Hughie... that was really great!

And Johnny does a great job as lead singer. I've also got the Van Zant album 'Brother to brother', by Johnny and Donnie Van Zant. Those Van Zant boys... can't help but like them
