There is nothing wrong with being a self-starter and an honest, hard worker. I'm in construction and probably will be until I cannot physically do it anymore. There is nothing wrong with being a janitor or window washer or waiter, or anything for that matter. The issue is people being FORCED into those positions by a religion. How many people have their potentials limited by ignorant religious leaders who lack nothing? They have all the food, clothing and shelter, and health insurance that they will ever need!

It's having a self righteous, automobile floor-mat salesman Elder, who worships 8 dudes in New York, haul you in the back room that pisses people off. We can start saying " Shower cutain ring salesman" if it makes you feel better.

XJWs don't mean to disparage window washers per se.

They just have a problem with men who barely qualify as window washers (ie. blue-collar workers) compelling 7 million others to accept their unquestioning authority and ideology (regardless of how right or wrong they may be) under threat of ostracism from your friends and family.

Dat.a Dog i agree with you whole heartedley. But dont all organisations do this to a degree. Work and work on the 515... one hour and fifteen minutes to work and one hour fifteen minutes home again..3 hours aday 15 hours a week.. most witnesses dont do those hours on the ministry in a month.

Having to work sucks. Most of us don't have dream jobs. I would love stay home with my family, but i can't.

That being said, the WTBTS is the only "Christian" organization that penalizes it's members for bettering their lot in life. Who else disciplines and harasses people for trying to work? We aren't talking about getting rich, we are talking about not worrying about money every week, or wondering if you will eat cat food when you are old. I can't think think of another "Christian" group that does this? Maybe some back-woods cult, but no "respectable" organization. Even Scientology let's you be a movie star if you want!

I agree Data Dog..but the other side of the coin is if we allow anything we do be it working on a factory line, selling soap or being a director in a large corporation...if we allow that to be more important than friends family and whats really important...so what i am saying is " Whats Bettering Ourselfs"...maybe its an ego problem or needing to be accepted ( hhich is a ego problem) ok then fear...

I hear ya. I had a job where I routinely worked 50-60 hours a week. I quit, and simplified my life a bit. It wasn't worth being away from my family, I just got stuck in a rut. I have a family member who is an Elder. He manuevered things where he can work 3-4 days a week and make just as much as if he worked a constant 40hrs. I may do the same. I just won't use my free time for the WTBTS.

There is some ego that goes into bettering yourself, I guess. It all up to the individual. You can be a jerky window washer, or a jerky DR. I personally have no desire to be "somebody" in the eyes of other people. Still, I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to change your situation if you can.

My issue is with the WTBTS making people feel like they are forsakeing spiritual things, just because they have bills and need to buy groceries, or plan for retirement. God knows the GB are not going to send me a check when I am old. They won't pay my medical bills so that I can pioneer. They do expect me to do it all myself and give the CO money for his bills and health insurance. I have to be shrewd and prepare for the calamity of old age. I can't think of a greater calamity that we will face than old age and death, can you?

Data a Dg you say " The G. B are not going to send you a check or pay your medical bills" f...king right and many elders are elders because there circumstances mean they dont have this worry. Oh i tell you what f...ks me off is the elderly who give there property to the society rather than there kids who are not witnesses. The elders are have the name as witnesses on the will. This is Wrong, so wrong. The governments must stop wills being witnessed by members of a religion when the money goes to the religion.

I remember the talks at the circuit assemblies where they interviewed young brothers who started their own window washing and carpet cleaning businesses and what a blessing...they could make good money doing jobs that "worldly" people didn't want, and they had time to serve Jehovah.

Years later they found that they have a ton of competition as many "worldly" people found they could also make good money doing the same thing.

Many brothers also developed health problems which made it difficult to do their job. The could hire employees, usually JW's, but they weren't always dependable.
