Mothers Day - is it celebrated?

The reason JW's don't celebrate Mothers day is because it is similar to Mother worship carried on by pagan greeks.

This is obviously an erroneous conclusion. It is not the origins of something that make it good or bad but the intent. Honoring parents is a Biblical principle. One day a year to give "special" contemplation to Mother or Father seems like a good exercise.

Actually most holidays can be traced back to Hallmark Cards.

The bible says you should honor your mother and father. Why is the watchtower telling you NOT to honor your mother (or father)one day a year? Must be something in the special invisible footnotes that only true believers can see?

"Most Holidays can be traced to Hallmark Cards"

    So true!

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL MOTHERS!!!!!!!!!

We do deserve it. My mom is dead, but she was a great mom. She always put her kids first, even if it meant sacrfice for herself. I'm sure that is why I feel the same way about my kids. What is wrong with taking some praise for all your year-round hard work. Yes I work hard for my kids, sometimes my husband gets jealous of them. He has said you love them more than me! You know what I tell him....Your right, I do love them more than you and never forget it. My husband can be replaced (though I would definitely miss him) but my kids could never be replaced. I would expect the same feelings from my husband for my kids and it does not bother me, or incite me to jealosy.

You know what is funny. I never wanted kids. I was devastated when I found out I was pregnant with my first. I prayed to God I would loose it. I was so miserable the whole pregnancy. I just knew this was going to ruin my life. I just didn't know what I was in for. I can honestly say the moment I first held him in my arms...It was truly love at first sight. The feeling was indescribable. And so I became a mom....and I thank God for unanswered prayers (lol isn't there a song that says that)

When I was a J-dub I found it hard to feel comfortable not celebrating birthdays, Mothers and Fathers Day. I saw the reasoning behind not celebrating the 4th of July and the like, but the others just left me towing a party line.

Since there are NO pagan roots to Mothers Day or Fathers Day, it is just honoring a parent. Is there anything wrong with honoring an individual? Nope......after all, aren't they supposed to give DOUBLE HONOR to elders?

    I will agree with Psychdigg
    regarding Mothers Day.
The GB does not want to celebrate ANYTHING that would conect with or be associated with in anyway anything that was is or once was pagan and Mothers Day can be trace back to Mother Worship.
As far as any days that are still allowed with in the WTS they will probably eventually be outs'd also along with the rest.
Personal I think it is a matter of personal concience.
If you look long and hard enough you can find something bad in everything including being alive.

btw Happy MoM's DAY to all the MOM"S ANd I wish I could have this year, funds too tight and all, But I have and will do again send the FTD Flower guy to my mom's with a nice boquet on Mom's day. Even though she does not celebrate mothers day she still LOVES flowers and Loves getting them so to heck with the WTS.

They certainly pick and choose their pagan dos and don'ts.
They wear wedding rings, white dresses, have bridesmaids etc., and they haven't made up any new names of the week, is there a nisan 20?

They had to do something with mother's & father's day tho.
What if you were shunning your mother, then had to turn around and get her a card? What if that one card sparked some old love feeling. Next thing you know you're sharing a meal, discussing how if it hadn't been for mother's day they might never have had that hug!... started discussing _____________ your choice - insert any # of fake df reasons,
(I like "who is Michael" and "Alpha Omega" & "1 thes 4:16" because they print the lie right in front of your face)

Yeah, they had to disassociate themselves from this activity. Could cause spiritual endangerment.

What about Secretary's day? Or when take a work mate out to lunch or for drinks because they are leaving your firm? everyone is paying for their food and drink. I don't see much difference.

Yes, there was "mother worship" in paganism, however, Mothers Day is not a carryover from that. Mothers Day is a fairly new holiday that sprung up to honor Mothers, not worship them. In the United States, Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948) is credited with bringing in the celebration of Mother's day. The way it is celebrated here is more in a secular way rather than religious.
